About this deal

I wouldn't recommend this to neurodivergent friends my own age *but*, if there were a neurodivergent teen or younger person in my life who loved books, I'd happily gift them this - especially an autistic young woman - I found the mentions of menstruation and hormones and how these effect autistic people to be really interesting. In Different, Not Less, 24-year-old actor, social media star and neurodivergent advocate Chloe Hayden shares the challenges and triumphs of her personal journey with autism and ADHD, including years of struggle as she moved between 10 schools in 8 years, the process of diagnosis and finally the joy of finding her ‘happily ever after’. I did find it a little bit frustrating when collective nouns were used to describe experiences when a key point of the book is that neurodivergence is different for everyone. This is a book to change lives, to inspire and has completely altered the way I see myself and my neurodivergence.

Chlo Hayden is an award-winning actor and disability advocate, motivational speaker and social media influencer whose story of being 'different, not less' has attracted a worldwide following. The book consists of autobiographical parts while it simultaneously tries to be a guide to autistic people.

I love these types of books as I was diagnosed with autism as an adult not so long ago and find them very helpful. What I personally got from it was the memoir aspect, I will never tire of hearing about individual neurodivergent experiences. Excellent book, aimed at young autistic people (especially valuable for girls) by a young autistic woman (with some advice for parents of autistic children thrown in too). I just finished listening to this and, whilst it was an enjoyable enough listen - this might be the most Gen-Z book I've ever engaged with. Even though she mentions that she also has ADHD there is rarely any mention of other neurodivergencies and I feel like we’re washing away the meaning of the word Neurodivergence by over-using it instead of stating the exact condition we’re talking about (here: autism).Ableism is so ingrained in society and this book is here to challenge all those attitudes that people hold about us, even the ones that are so deeply embedded that we internalise the idea that we are less than.

I feel like the assumed readers are kids/teens with similar interests to Chloé who would enjoy all the fairy tale analogies and find something new in the advice about school, dating, self care, socialising, and adulting. It was clear to me throughout the entire book that Hayden comes from a background of immense privilege - she has always had access to people who support her and to the financial resources necessary to access supports and opportunities (a large supportive family, a full suite of medical testing, horse riding, surfing, overseas travel, private schools and home schooling, etc. Biography: Chlo Hayden is an award-winning actor and disability advocate, motivational speaker and social media influencer whose story of being 'different, not less' has attracted a worldwide following. Jordon Steele-John, Disability Rights Advocate and Australian Senator 'Chlo's spirit in the face of adversity had me cheering!Payments made using National Book Tokens are processed by National Book Tokens Ltd, and you can read their Terms and Conditions here. The areas of life in which I have the highest support needs - parenting and "running a home" (whatever that means) - aren't mentioned. Reading Different, Not Less brought me a sense of reassurance that there was a place for me in this world, that I would find my happily ever after. This is a memoir about growing up with autism and ADHD and is a first hand insight into what it means to be neurodivergent (having a brain that isn’t typical).
