Bird’s egg of a skull’ and ‘nesting machine guns’ are also the first instances of the symbiosis of the world of man described with imagery of nature and visa versa. The poem begins with a reference to RS Thomas – again showing the importance of Welsh identity to Sheers. A substitute for reading all of the poems in Skirrid Hill many, many times… in fact, the only way to get anything out of this commentary is to read the poems a couple of times first, then read my commentary, then read the poems again. We’ve partnered with Cotswold Outdoor to help everyone make the most of their time outdoors in the places we care for. The only cleverness that I will credit this poem with is the way that it develops the paradox of ‘Last Act’. Sheers gave us an ‘ending’ right at the beginning of the book, now he is giving us another ending in a situation which is usually the mark of the beginning of something (getting new keys cut).

The setting is almost clichéd — the lovers are on holiday in the romance capital of Europe, Paris. Despite this, the setting seems irrelevant; their relationship is not enhanced by the location and they seem isolated from the rest of the world. The ending suggests that their love affair is in the past. We recommend parking at the car park in Abergavenny called Fairfield NP7 5SG. Please note that walks starting in the town centre will be longer and we recommend you plan your route in advance. Skirrid Hill’ takes its origin from the Welsh, ‘Ysgirid Fawr’ which roughly translates as ‘shattered mountain’. ‘Skirrid’ can also mean ‘divorced or separated’ – the theme is the connotation of something broken down or split away — the natural deterioration and separation of people and things. The ‘elephant’s graveyard of cars’ is a potent image within the collection as it reminds us of Mametz Wood. The ground is gradually purging itself of the manmade impositions (it was dead bodies and their uniforms in the first poem, now it is ‘dead’ abandoned cars). Enjoy this leisurely stroll through the woods and around the hillside before it turns into a short, steep climb to the summit. At the wooden way marker turn right and take the path that heads directly up the hill. Sheers is aware that much poetry was written during the war itself and no amount of empathy could move him to write something which would transcend existing accounts of the experience itself. However, by writing about the aftermath of the war, he is able to convey the profound grief and injustice caused by the event and its ongoing effects.

Skirrid mountain has a distinctive shape. It stands separated from the rest of the range, with one side hollowed out and a long ridge leading from it’s summit. On the summit there are ruins of an Iron Age Hill fort and a Medieval chapel dedicated to St. Michael. Nearby you can find the Skirrid Mountain Inn which is reputed to be the oldest and most haunted pub in Wales. The Skirrid Inn is 900 years old with a fascinating and dark history. This poem stands out against the rest of the collection, with the extended metaphor of keys and key-cutting to describe the nature of their relationship. It has the obvious sexual connotations but also explores the idea of things fitting together and being made for each other.

Legend has it that Great Skirrid and Little Skirrid were created after the crucifixion of Christ. The mountain was so angered by the horrible event that it split and broke into two pieces. For this reason Skirrid Fawr is often known as Holy Mountain and also explains the Welsh name Ysgyryd Fawr which translates to Great Shattered. Just as it began with an ironic title, the final line, ‘a strange harvest of the seeds we’d sown’ has the intended semantic link with robbing the lambs of their seed. The 38th Division comprised soldiers of several Welsh regiments, young men who had been urged to enlist by the rhetoric of David Lloyd George and seduced by the promise of adventure and ‘glory’. They were amateur soldiers, full of enthusiasm but poorly trained, ill-equipped and badly hampered by the tactics of their commanders. The title of this poem is a pun on ‘father’. The poem explores the relationship between the poet and his father, and also the nature of generations and family inheritance in the emotional and spiritual sense. The parallel is drawn here between his father’s use of tree-planting to mark both life and death and how sometimes a sunrise and sunset can look the same. We can link this with the death of Christ in the previous poem marking the birth of Christianity, or in the fact that he rose again.Hiking routes include the ever popular Pen y Fan, Llyn y Fan Fach, Sugar Loaf and the Four Falls.
