About this deal

For the chocolate covered nuts and raisins they use a dark chocolate with 60 per cent cocoa and they are polished using a glucose syrup. The Champion & Reeves range includes Dessert Nougat - with blanched almonds, pistachio, cherries, orange blossom honey and rose water, Butterscotch – with orange blossom honey and Cream Toffee with Macadamia - with double cream and macadamia nuts, among others. Champion & Reeves’ main customer is UK specialist confectionery wholesaler The House of Sarunds, which distributes to high-end retailers such as Harvey Nichols, Selfridges and John Lewis.

We believe we are the only confectionery company in the world to add both blanched almonds and roasted pistachio to our nougat. In addition we add as much as 3 times more premium honey to our nougat than any of our competitors. We use the finest Italian cherries in our Rose Dessert Nougat and our vanilla is the most expensive, ten fold concentrated extract money can buy. Callard & Bowser was founded in the 1850s and was the largest manufacturer of nougat in Britain by 1974. But the classic brand was later discontinued leaving many customers reminiscing over its famous dessert nougat. Does Callard and Bowser still exist? Daniel James Callard (1824 – 1903) was born to a prosperous non-conformist family of London bakers. Members of the Callard family had been bakers in the metropolis since the seventeenth century, and Daniel Callard became a master baker himself. Callard & Bowser butterscotch consisted of 11.7 percent butter fat and 79.3 percent sugar, according to an analysis conducted for the British Medical Journal in 1907.

The company was founded by two Scottish brothers, Richard Callard and John Bowser, in 1779 in Maryhill, Glasgow during the Scottish Enlightenment period. Callard and Bowser was owned by Arthur Guinness & Sons from 1953 to 1982 when it was acquired by the American conglomerate Beatrice Foods. Who owns Callard and Bowser?

Champion & Reeves cofounders: Andrew Reeves, production and development director and Jacqueline Champion, managing director.Callard & Bowser-Suchard Inc. is today a New York-based subsidiary of Mars-Wrigley. It produces Altoids, a brand created by the original Scottish firm.

There are limitations. The more natural and organic you are, the shelf life is reduced,” said Reeves. It's pretty canny because most people just assume the Walls they knew as a kid is the same one they see now. Though actually you won't find "Walls" on many of their products now because it's much cheaper for them to use the same designs in many countries, so they tend to just use the Heartbrand logo - especially for ice lollies. They still use Walls on UK only products like 'Cream of Cornish' ice cream as it makes no sense to remove it if they only sell it in the UK. We do portion control-sized individually wrapped pieces of nougat. It’s confectionery but with an eye on portion control and quality over quantity. Callard & Bowser produced the highest-selling butterscotch in the British Empire. The founding-family sold the business in the 1930s and its successive owners included Guinness, United Biscuits and Kraft. Nougat is traditionally made from whipping together honey, egg whites and almonds. Champion & Reeves use an orange blossom honey, roasted pistachios and almonds that have been blanched to remove the bitter taste that can be caused by the skins. “It’s a very soft nougat because of the amount of honey we put in it, that’s what makes it special,” says Jacqueline, who previously worked in financial services.Andrew Reeves is founder of puzzle business Sonic Games. He appeared on Dragon’s Den, the UK equivalent of Shark Tank, and turned down equity offers for his gaming firm. The entrepreneur’s puzzle business is based around Egyptian goddess Isis and the Iraq and the Syria-based group of the same name has impacted business. This led Reeves to explore new ventures, but he continues to run the gaming firm. Jacqueline Champion, his partner, cofounder and managing director of Champion & Reeves, also serves as director of Sonic Games. Unilever effectively acquired all the popular ice cream brands in most developed countries and kept the original brand names while replacing their logos with the Heartbrand logo.
