About this deal

Download Without Warning and Only Sometimes: Scenes from an Unpredictable Childhood by Kit de Waal in PDF EPUB format complete free. I would definitely recommend the audiobook in particular, which is narrated by the author, as I feel like this enhanced the experience. I loved the mother in this book as she was very inventive when it came to earning a living and keeping her family together. If you want to find out how and why the sweet, clever, permanently uncertain Mandy grew up to be Kit de Waal – the bestselling author of My Name Is Leon, among others, and tireless amplifier of working-class voices in literature – then you must read this book. Born to a Caribbean father and an Irish mother, life was very tough growing up in a home where 'both her parents were waiting for paradise.

One day, a knock at the door comes and it’s a woman bearing magazines full of pictures of happy people. My only complaint is that the book feels a little short (but I almost could have listened to this forever) and occasionally a little anecdotal and surface level.

Not shallow as in the author is a shallow person, but shallow as in I wish certain stories and emotions were explored more. Kit de Waal was born in 1960 in Birmingham to an Irish mother and a father from St Kitts in the Caribbean. At her friend’s house, Mandy’s posh playmate Cressida turns down trays of food and pop brought by her mother as they’re “not hungry”. This memoir is an astonishingly good evocation of the dream and reality of migration to postwar Birmingham, a city that must have seemed flush with cash to anyone moving from elsewhere. It's a memoir filled with warmth, joy and heartbreak, written with the immediacy of a thriller and the poignancy of a love letter.Kit takes you on a thrilling ride traversing her past filled with humour, faith, joy and dysfunction.

Such a strong memoir that makes me want to read more of Kit de Waal's backlist, those books I keep telling myself I'll get to when I have the time. This book tells the problem of racial and class prejudice from the inside as well as the strangeness of some of the beliefs of the Jehovah's witnesses.

If you'd prefer not to see a GP, you may be able to make an appointment at an NHS continence service instead.

Caught between three worlds, Irish, Caribbean and British in 1960s Birmingham, Kit and her brothers and sisters knew all the words to the best songs, caught sticklebacks in jam jars and braved hunger and hellfire until they could all escape. He's spend money they didn't have on gifts to send to relatives there, and eventually left the family to go back. Here is a quick description and cover image of book Without Warning and Only Sometimes: Scenes from an Unpredictable Childhood written by Kit de Waal which was published in January 1, 2022. As she reached adulthood I became shocked and saddened by how she lost her way, but then at the end was saved by books . The only thing which left me questioning was what I didn't share about that overly religious and disorganised, somewhat unstable childhood.
