About this deal

The Fellowship of the Ring was originally released on 29 July 1954 in the United Kingdom (3000 copies; plus 1500 for the American edition). IV · A Short Cut to Mushrooms — They meet Farmer Maggot from taking a short cut, and he gives them some of his prized mushrooms. Although Boromir, the representative of Gondor, the greatest kingdom of men, argues that the Ring should be used as a weapon against the Enemy, the Council resolves to destroy it.

The Fellowship of the Ring is the first of three volumes of the epic novel [2] The Lord of the Rings by the English author J. Used books have different signs of use and might not include supplemental materials such as CDs, Dvds, Access Codes, charts or any other extra material. VI - The Old Forest - Although trying to avoid it, the hobbits get lost and travel to the River Withywindle, the "queerest part of the whole wood". The innkeeper delivers a letter from Gandalf recommending a weather-beaten Ranger known as Strider as their guide to the elves. The Fall of Gondolin isn’t required reading, but for Tolkien fans who particularly love his elvish lore, it’s a slam dunk. They are captured by rangers led by Faramir, Boromir's brother, and brought to the secret fastness of Henneth Annûn.

Their attempt to cross the Misty Mountains is foiled by heavy snow, so they are forced to take a path under the mountains via Moria, an ancient Dwarf kingdom, now full of Orcs and other evil creatures, where Gandalf falls into the abyss after battling a Balrog. Aragorn, accompanied by Legolas, Gimli, and the Rangers of the North, takes the Paths of the Dead to recruit the Dead Men of Dunharrow, oathbreakers who will have no rest until they fight for the King of Gondor. After Milton Waldman, his contact at Collins, expressed the belief that The Lord of the Rings itself "urgently wanted cutting", Tolkien eventually demanded that they publish the book in 1952.

III · Three is Company — Frodo sells Bag End, and officially is going to move to a house at Crickhollow in the area beyond Bucklebury in Buckland.

Seventeen years later, in " The Shadow of the Past", Gandalf confirms to Frodo that the Ring is the one lost by the Dark Lord Sauron long ago and counsels Frodo to take it away from the Shire. He was inspired primarily by his profession, philology; [T 8] his work centred on the study of Old English literature, especially Beowulf, and he acknowledged its importance to his writings. Steeped in unrivalled magic and otherworldliness, its sweeping fantasy and epic adventure has touched the hearts of young and old alike. The story was effectively finished the next year, but Tolkien did not complete the revision of earlier parts of the work until 1949. He anthologized his findings into The History of Middle-earth, a downright massive twelve-volume series containing Tolkien’s vast droves of auxiliary lore, from stories to poems to song cycles. The Council of Elrond", the second chapter of Book 2, is the longest chapter in that book at some 15,000 words, and critical for explaining the power and threat of the Ring, for introducing the final members of the Fellowship of the Ring, and for defining the planned quest to destroy it. Galadriel's husband Celeborn gives the Fellowship boats, elven cloaks, and waybread (Lembas), and they travel down the River Anduin to the hill of Amon Hen. Of course, it may also help that The Fellowship of the Ring starts off in the exact same way that the films did and that was my very first introduction to Tolkein. Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas track the hobbits to Fangorn, where they meet Gandalf: he explains that he killed the Balrog; he too was killed in the fight, but was sent back to Middle-earth.

The Black Riders pursue Frodo into the Ford of Bruinen, where they are swept away by flood waters summoned by Elrond. Positive- Love Serkis’ performance (minus the above) has some good voices for the characters and very nice to listen to. II - The Council of Elrond - A council attended by many people; Gandalf tells the story of his escape from Saruman; they decide that the Ring must be destroyed and Frodo offers to take it to Mordor, and the Fellowship of the Ring is formed. Frodo and Sam, en route to Mordor, form an uneasy alliance with the wretched creature Gollum, who guides them to their destination while plotting to steal the ring.

The Orcs represented the worst of it as workers that have been tortured and brutalized by the war and industry. Expand old poems, develop characters mentioned in them (Old Man Willow, Tom Bombadil, the Barrow-wight).
