About this deal

I work with children with complex needs in an outdoor environment and despite it being my birthday present I let them use it because its easy to look through and there are plenty of pictures and creates excitement and reduces fear of spiders. The sector spider (also known as the missing sector orb weaver or the silver-sided sector spider) is a UK spider that lives only in houses. Mike Roberts re-drew all the pedipalps and epigynes and repainted the colour plates for this single-volume field guide.

I can't think of a field guide to any group of organisms that is more densely packed with information than this guide to Britain's spiders. This book will encourage interest in and recording or studying of spiders, let alone help students, photographers, general naturalists and those involved with ecological surveys. Individual accounts cover 404 species-all of Britain’s “macro” spiders and the larger money spiders, with the limitations to field identification clearly explained. Key features are briefly described for each species, together with notes on habitat, biology and similar species, a thumbnail distribution map and rarity/conservation status. Illustrated with a remarkable collection of photographs, it is designed to be accessible to a wide audience, including those new to spider identification.A guide to spider families, based on features recognizable in the field, focussing on body shape and other characteristics, as well as separate guides to webs and egg-sacs. Geoff Oxford, a biologist who taught at the University of York for more than four decades, is an authority on spider colour variation and speciation. Individual accounts cover 395 of Britain’s approximately 670 species, with the limitations to field identification clearly explained. Found in shrubbery and hedgerows, cucumber spiders are most commonly seen in the UK from April to October.
