With a pH of around 9, baking soda is alkaline. Adding it to your homemade mouthwash can help alkalize the mouth, making it a less hospitable place for bacteria that cause cavities and gingivitis. It can also help balance your oral pH after having ingested acidic foods that can be damaging to your teeth. Use mouthwash 2-3 times per day after brushing your teeth. Remember to mix well right before use because oil and water don't mix. I prefer not to use any additives when I make my DIY mouth rinses so the mixtures will separate. Among the medical products recommended for the cure of gingivitis, chlorhexidine-based mouthwash is included. In fact, chlorhexidine is a synthetic biguanide cationic molecule with a strong bactericidal and bacteriostatic action. However, if its use is prolonged, it can cause dental dyschromia, taste alteration, and plaque deposit. That is why, over the last decades, researchers looked for an alternative to this molecule, so that gingivitis could be cured without any limitation or complication, due to the use of the medication over time.

Thank you Betsy for your response, but I still do have a lingering question, as the toothpaste does have baking soda in them. I was wondering if the toothpaste is safe to use everyday without irritating the gums? As I have stopped for a day after brushing with baking soda every night and my painful/irritated gums became almost normal again. I do have a pretty minor form of receding gums but was bleeding and hurting a lot when eating/flossing/brushing a couple days ago, until I recently took a short break from brushing with baking soda. In T0, patients of the two groups showed a significant general situation characterized by presence of plaque and bleeding on probing. Technically, in group A, the mean PI was 57.45% and the mean BI was 22.20% for 20 patients. Two pregnant women were then added to these patients, changing the two scores: 53.25% and 38.41%. You, your co-workers, family members, friends and (most of all) your significant other, will appreciate the results!!! When using essential oils in mouthwash, use caution with hot oils like oregano, cinnamon, clove, and thyme. Start with one drop, stop using if mouth irritation occurs. You can dilute hot essential oils first with a teaspoon of virgin coconut oil before adding to warm water if needed. Clove oil is generally safe to use with children over age 2, but I don’t suggest using a mouthwash with any oil on a child that young.

Is It Safe To Rinse Mouth With Tea Tree Oil

Convenient and mess-free application: The attached rollerball allows for precise application without wasting a single drop. Fatemeh M, et al. (2018). The effect of toothbrushing and flossing sequence on interdental plaque reduction and fluoride retention: A randomized controlled clinical trial. You may have dental pain and want to soothe your mouth until your dentist is able to see you. Or maybe you’re trying to ease the pain of a canker sore or other small wound and help keep it from getting infected.

Mprin M, et al. (2015). Green tea extract and its major constituent epigallocatechin-3-gallate inhibit growth and halitosis-related properties of Solobacterium moorei. In a 2015 study, researchers noted that green tea extract slowed the growth of a type of bacteria associated with halitosis, aka bad breath. Guava leaves have long been an effective treatment used to manage oral hygiene. Several studies have found the antibacterial and antimicrobial properties of guava leaf mouthwash to have a positive effect on controlling plaque. Perhaps you want to freshen your breath before a date. Or maybe you can’t get a brushing in, and you’re looking for a way to clean your mouth and raise the pH after eating.

Gingivitis is a very common disease and affects a wide range of population. At the same time, the increasing “social” value of the mouth, has led to a boom of the production of products, synthetic or natural, can facilitate the attainment of the objective. Peppermint essential oil and tea tree oil are added for their antibacterial properties. Peppermint also adds a natural minty flavor to homemade mouthwash. I like to buy my essential oils from Plant Therapy. Green tea is more than a refreshing drink. It also has effective bacteria-fighting properties that can combat bad breath. Of course, I think all of us know about store-bought mouthwash: the famous neon blue or green colors (far from natural, right?!) and a long list of ingredients that are far from natural. The rational mechanical removal of the plaque daily appears to be the only practical means for a long-term improvement of oral hygiene, although it may be flanked by a chemical control ( 5 – 7).

The home remedies explained below are generally safe to use. But seek medical advice before use if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding, or have any other medical condition. You shouldn’t use this mouthwash if you’ve ever had an allergic reaction to aloe vera. Tea tree oil mouthwash This study aimed to demonstrate the efficacy of a new mouthwash, Tebodont, based on essential oil of Melaleuca alternifolia, in the control of bacterial plaque and inflammatory response, cause and expression of gingivitis.Stir 1 teaspoon of baking soda and 2 tablespoons of peroxide in an 8oz glass of warm water. (Mixing the baking soda with peroxide and warm water minimizes the salty taste of the baking soda). Directions: Mix oil blend together. Add mixture to 1 tablespoon warm water. Swish and gargle the solution around the mouth for 3-5 minutes, then spit out into the garbage. Rinse mouth with water. Good for one treatment. Directions: Mix in vinegar and essential oil into warm water. To use, swish the mouthwash around in your mouth for at least 30 seconds before spitting it out. Good for one treatment.

Citronella is a powerful oil that is known for its insect-repelling properties and can help to create a peaceful environment. Gum disease (aka periodontal disease) is inflammation of the gums. It can lead to the breakdown of the gums, teeth, and bone tissues that hold them in place. Gum disease may increase the risk of heart disease because inflammation in the gums and bacteria may eventually lead to the narrowing of important arteries (heart disease). If you plan on having children use this mouthwash, you can add peppermint extract instead of peppermint essential oil to flavor your mouthwash. (It won’t be completely alcohol-free, then, but the amount of alcohol added is almost negligible.) Mouthwash ingredients to avoid He noticed that tea tree oil was 13 times more active on microorganisms than carbolic acid; since then, the oil started being promoted as therapeutic agent. To corroborate the spectrum of action represented by these data, Penfold et al compared the oil to a strong antiseptic of his period. Essential oils add flavor to your mouthwash, but they are an active ingredient when used in a high enough concentration. The goal is to have the oils disrupt the bacterial cell wall of the bacteria in your plaque. If you kill the bacteria, it won’t form acid, which thereby helps avoid cavities, gingivitis, and periodontal disease. Portable and travel-friendly: The compact size of the roller bottles makes them perfect for on-the-go use, allowing you to enjoy the benefits of essential oils anytime, anywhere. The antimicrobial activity of Melaleuca oil was compared with carbolic acid, or phenol, the gold standard of that time with a Rideal-Walker Coefficient test known as (RW), and the result was that the activity of the TTO was 11 times more active ( 18). Accordingly the TTO was promoted as a therapeutic agent. Furthermore, the subjects of the trial better appreciated tea tree oil’s typical taste compared with that of chlorhexidine, improving also the breath, especially when used first thing in the morning. All participants accomplished this without any taste alteration, dental dyschromia, or plaque deposit.
