According to a 1972 interview with Stevens, the inspiration for the title was a name he created to describe his penis: "'Mona Bone Jakon' is another name for my penis. I never connected with the later albums, (I thought he went a bit - Cliff Richard) but listening again to 'Sad Lisa' from Tea for the Tillerman, his next album, it is possible to hear a common thread.

What rescues the record is, taken as a whole, it is a complete and dramatic journey of someone who is looking here and there and asking a lot of questions and ultimately, seeing fame and fortune for what it is.
