Is it surprising that, having known no love in her own life, she is able to love Jordan as she does? Her self-conscious explorations of reality as ambiguous and in a constant stasis of incompletion are a delightful foray into postmodernism. One of the dancing princesses speaks this quotation to Jordan as she explains to him what happened after their marriage. Set in 17th century London, Sexing the Cherry is about the journeys of a mother, known as The Dog Woman, and her protégé, Jordan. What does Winterson mean when she says “matter, that thing the most solid and the well known, which you are holding in your hands and which makes up your body, is now known to be mostly empty space.

Told through the lens of historical fiction, such as in The Passion, blended with the magical realism, Sexing the Cherry questions what we perceive as real or factual.Dog Woman describes how a French gardener named Andre Mollet is helping Tradescant to design the elaborate and beautiful palace gardens. I have never recognised the past as a document, rather I understand it as a kind of lumber room, full of trunks of old clothes and odd mementos. Rescued by the Dog-Woman, a giant strong enough to fling an elephant into the air, their lives together will take them on a dizzying journey through space and time. Jeanette Winterson’s prose is such a perfect blend of charisma and poetics fueled by an endless reservoir of imagination.

Even though (or perhaps because) Dog Woman is a relatively disinterested observer in matters of sexuality, she can see that attempts to suppress the pursuit of sexual expression are doomed to fail, and almost certainly hypocritical. And I sing of other times, when I was happy, though I know that these are figments of my mind and nowhere I have been. In each of the stories that the princesses tell, the male figure is oppressive, dominating, foul, and overall a burden to the women. The tradition of telling stories starting with the oral tradition continued with the emergence of fairy tales.
