In Depression-era New York, unscrupulous filmmaker Carl Denham (Jack Black) is desperate to find a leading lady for his new picture. All cast members had itself nicely to this piece with Watts as the pretty actress, Black as the director with a intriguing resemblance both in reptutation and struggle as a young Orson Welles and Brody as the playwright mixed into the mess of things. The lighting looks much brighter in these HDR exteriors too, making them feel more natural and, surprisingly, giving you a new-found respect for the special effects work. King Kong's UHD occasionally struggles to find greatness but nevertheless stands as a substantial improvement over the Blu-ray. But with other big budget monster remakes (like Godzilla and Mighty Joe Young) in the works from other studios, Universal suddenly got cold feet about Kong and pulled the plug on it.

I even think the lengthy amount of time Jackson invests in developing his characters and creating the time period at the start just about pays off, even though there may have been more economical ways to get us to the same level of emotional investment if only Jackson had bothered to look for them. After even more interminable Jurassic Park-lite scenes involving Kong fighting (and fighting, and fighting) with dinosaurs, and Gollum (Andy Serkis) being attacked by giant bugs, Kong and Ann fall in love. CGI appears natural, but doesn’t scream “special effect” while the overall mood and tone is dark, the image is never really challenged in the least.
