About this deal

The series has thrown one major twist after another at its readers, but ultimately that’s what everything comes down to. This story has far more in common with a Billy Wilder movie than say Chinatown, but it works very well. It’s an implicit embracing of his black heritage when he talks about the “negro went crazy” label as he punches out the Wayne Manor security. In a key scene when a gun goes off, the use of white to convey the light of the bullet firing looks fantastic, with the characters drenched in an unrealistic but vivid red.

I suppose it’s not inherently a bad thing, and I know a lot of people prefer that more decompressed style, but if your job is to review every issue as it comes out then it can lead to problems. Ex-cop turned PI Slam Bradley is hired to deliver a letter to the Waynes which turns out to be a ransom note. But Gotham going from the golden city to crime infested dumpster fire in twenty years is quite a stretch.

Jordie Bellaire’s colors really shine here, as stark, pale depictions of Slam highlight the reds of the fire and blood.

Here at its final moments, she manages to calmly control the conversation even while Slam and Richard struggle over a gun. It manages to tie up all the loose ends, meaningfully place a thematic poignancy on the characters' actions, and remain tense and exciting through to the end. After Constance tells Sam what happened, she turns and shoots Richard in the head, killing him instantly. Questions/Spoilers - This is just speculation and it doesn't matter much either way but was Slam Bradley previously described as half black?

El hombre murciélago solo escucha la historia que le narra el viejo detective Slam Bradley en su lecho de muerte. Richard’s chemical plant which he fought so hard for later falls into a state of decay and becomes the Ace Chemical where Joker would be born. I mentioned earlier that the Wayne’s “revitalization” project ignores or even actively harms the people living in the city’s poorer South Side, but what the story is very emphatic on pointing out is that the people who live there are almost all black. It makes sense whenever stories are issue-based, and I think I'm just too used to movie pacing and getting to get a feel for the world and the characters and the tone before jumping into the meat of the story since I've been watching a lot of movies lately, but it still bothered me. At best it’s trying to fit a square peg in a round hole, and at worst it’s a complete disregard for the sandbox you’re playing in.

A place for fans of DC's comics, graphic novels, movies, and anything else related to one of the largest comic book publishers in the world and home of the World's Greatest Superheroes!
