As a whole, these characters are one-dimensional at the beginning but develop throughout the read so that by the end, you are invested in who they are and their survival or demise - dependent on who they are. Mack felt pretty realistic in her personality and her closed-offness, and I enjoyed how we slowly unpacked her trauma as well as how she perceives her role in some of the outcomes. I would be quite interested to see what type of monster is created for the show compared to my imagination. The labyrinth of a theme park in which the story is set represents a space for characters and readers alike to reflect and question, a space to mourn and hope, to love and hate as a system plagued by inequity and injustice is explored.

Often sad, interspersed with lighter touches of humour, the book is a record of lives that function without families, jobs or prospects, yet are still portrayed with a sense of dignity amid the depression. A high-stakes hide-and-seek competition in an abandoned amusement park comes to life in this graphic novel adaptation of the bestselling thriller. I connected quickly with several of the characters and was constantly guessing and trying to put the puzzle pieces together.The premise is ridiculous, there is a touch too much exposition, it contains a weirdly interpretive ending, and there is a lot of eye rolling moments but, it's exactly what you expect from the blurb and it's fun. We were then introduced to several supporting characters, some were very forgettable (which I think was intentional from the main character's point of view), some were fleshed out a little more and were more central to the storyline but they still fell a little flat in my opinion.

Mack and Ava, together with a young man named LeGrand, hope to thwart the diabolical plans of the Asterion families and save themselves. Still, the characters are compelling, and the hide-and-seek aspect of the book is entertaining, if not exactly scary. But as the people around her begin disappearing one by one, Mack realizes this competition is more dangerous than she’d imagined, and that together might be the only way to survive.m. will be confiscated and thrown out, so they can’t even leave their meager possessions on the cot that is not theirs. Kiersten White possesses a stunning grasp of her craft, and has yet again delivered a novel I’ll remember for the rest of my life. But though her adult debut is very much a grisly tale of horror, it also features many of the same elements that make White’s other worlds so appealing, from its fast-paced, page-turning plot to its diverse cast of memorable characters and the complex, often unlikeable heroine at its center, who is wrestling with a dark past of her own . Now the stage for a strange and sinister competition with menacing undertones the place is inspired by the myth of the minotaur. Being a peer of the realm the grandiose came easily to him, and in 1905 the massive, even forbidding, red-brick edifice arose in Camden Town in London, filled with 382 beds for impoverished manual labourers.

White doesn’t always connect her own dots, so there are some aspects of the story that don’t make much sense, especially in the last quarter of the novel. The 14 players have been brought to Amazement Park as human sacrifices by a group of families who, a few generations ago, conjured a demonic monster. Each has their own reason for being in the competition, but you start to realise that they may have more in common than they know. The way the author explores the character’s trauma while incorporating it into the plot was fascinating and made me admire the characters even more.

But as players develop alliances and rivalries, it becomes clear to some that there’s more than money at stake, while others uncover the horrors lurking in the park. I think I had notions that this would be an all out horror-fest, a kind of mindless slasher story where just a couple of survivors are left scrabbling around trying to stay alive. There are warped carnival prizes collapsing games tents and undergrowth so dense there are places it’s impossible to see through.

Hide is a truly excellent and distinctive book, one that I’m sure will stick with me for the near future. Hide was a fun read, it was easy and I really hope this becomes a movie because I think it would be worth watching.We predominantly follow one character, Mack, who has her own personal family tragedy to contend with, a history that makes her feel like a shoe-in for this competition.
