if a child had come into the ER that i work in with a hysterical grandmother, a child with a red mark, and the childs mother, i would have quoted the law in NY which states "a mark left for 3 days". Not only had I deeply disappointed her, but I had also damaged my young body for the stupidest of reasons. They were the only parents of all the friends I had in high school that stayed married (all the rest divorced at some point, even if some re-married). What we do know is that severe corporal punishment can be extremely damaging and dangerous, and this is what the law prohibits as abuse.

At least from a Pro-Spanking perspective I can see that children are human beings who need to be taught that certain behaviors aren't acceptable and that their are immediate negative repercussions to their actions. If you do some form of behavior and it always results in pain being inflicted on your behind afterwards, you will quickly learn not to engage in that behavior whether it be a specific action or a parent saying "NO" to what you are doing.

Actually if you were that woman you'd go to jail, never see your kids again and the mother would have custody. I went and got them anyhow so they had the option of either guarding it (essentially screwing up whatever they were doing) or just giving up. Heh, whenever I misbehaved my dad would make me either fetch his belt or go cut a branch off a willow tree and I learned very quickly to not be a brat. There are thousands and thousands of cases of injuries and the occasional death because the parent got carried away. I shared a house with my sister for a while in a new city, and helped her raise her son/my nephew for a couple of years, he started turning into a little brat at one point, a few spanks and some tears later, now he actually listens when you tell him to do things.
