About this deal

While the premise of MIKA IN REAL LIFE is familiar enough, Emiko Jean makes the adopted child–meets–birth parent narrative her own in this sparkling, tender and emotionally resonant novel.

Mika and Hana are pleasingly still best friends and in fact, even though there is the family “romance” of mother and daughter reuniting and romance for Mika herself, the primary relationship in the book is between these two loving friends, and they are surrounded by a great friendship group of diverse and interesting people. Parts of this story were predictable with the lies tumbling down around Mika and hurting Penny, but I enjoyed the aftermath and how Mika handled herself with true grace and maturity. Payments made using National Book Tokens are processed by National Book Tokens Ltd, and you can read their Terms and Conditions here.I really enjoyed the letters about Penny and how it gave the book almost a diary/memoir kind of feel.

After all, her daughter is still dealing with the passing of her adopted mother, and Mika feels an even stronger desire to forge a bond and shower her with love. Penny, who was raised in Ohio by white adoptive parents, and whose mother has died, wants to meet Mika. This YA novel with broad appeal follows a Japanese American girl on the ride of her life as she discovers her father is the Crown Prince of Japan.Reading Mika’s thoughts can be depressing sometimes but she was so sincere; she gripped my heart and made me fall in love. It had the right amount of sweet moments with heartache, growth with real life elements of hardship and all of it was held together with an underlying current of family.
