About this deal

The safety of Cerenia has not been established in dogs less than 8 weeks of age, or in cats less than 16 weeks of age, and in pregnant or lactating dogs and cats. The responsible veterinarian should make a benefit-risk assessment before using Cerenia in dogs less than 8 weeks of age, or in cats less than 16 weeks of age, or in pregnant or lactating bitches and cats. Maropitant is metabolised in the liver and therefore should be used with caution in dogs and cats with liver disease. Cerenia should be used with caution in animals suffering from or with predisposition for heart diseases. Participants in the NOAH Compendium are listed at http://www.noahcompendium.co.uk/company-directory More specifically, Cerenia is a neurokinin-1 (NK1) receptor antagonist that stops substance P from binding to NK1 receptors. NK1 receptors are intimately involved in the initiation of vomiting. As well as in the chemoreceptor trigger zone (CRTZ) and the vomiting centre in the brain, they are found in the vagus nerve (close to the digestive tract). Participants in the NOAH Compendium book are listed at http://www.noahcompendium.co.uk/company-directory

Do not use this veterinary medicinal product after the expiry date which is stated on the blister after EXP. Cerenia solution for injection is used in dogs both to prevent nausea and vomiting before and after an operation and to improve recovery from general anaesthesia after use of morphine. Cerenia is used to prevent (tablets and solution for injection) and treat (solution for injecton) nausea caused by chemotherapy in dogs. Cerenia must not be mixed with other veterinary medicinal products in the same syringe as its compatibility with other products has not been tested. The safety of Cerenia has not been established in dogs less than 16 weeks of age and in pregnant or lactating bitches. Use only according to a risk benefit assessment by the responsible veterinary surgeon. In the study looking at the effect of Cerenia before and after surgery, Cerenia was effective at preventing vomiting asociated with the use of morphine. Only one out of 16 dogs given Cerenia vomited after receiving morphine, whilst 14 out of 15 dogs given placebo vomited, and in this group, nine of the dogs that vomited did so more than once. For the prevention and treatment of vomiting, in conjunction with Cerenia solution for injection and in combination with other supportive measures. Cerenia tablets should be administered once daily, at a dose of 2 mg maropitant per kg bodyweight, using the number of tablets given in the table below. Tablets are breakable along the score line on the tablet. Half tablets should be stored for a maximum of two days after removal from the blister. Half-tablets should be returned to the opened blister and kept within the cardboard outer. Vomiting is normally prompted when impulses from the chemoreceptor trigger zone (CRTZ) in the brain are sent to the vomiting center in another part of the brain known as the medulla.

In some individual dogs and when repeating the treatment, lower doses than recommended might be sufficient. In cats, moderate to severe response to injection is very commonly observed (in approximately one third of cats). Cerenia can be used to treat or prevent vomiting either as tablets or as solution for injection administered once daily. Cerenia solution for injection may be administered for up to five days and Cerenia tablets for up to fourteen days. Incidents of pre-travel vomiting, usually within two hours post-dosing, were commonly reported after administration of the 8 mg/kg dose. Some owners may experience allergic skin reactions themselves due to topical exposure to the drug after handling tablets, perhaps associated with skin sensitization, so it’s advised that people should wash their hands after administering tablets to their pets. Drug InteractionsFinally, Cerenia has been found to help to prevent itchiness in cats with non-flea, non-food-induced hypersensitivity dermatitis. The book remains a welcome and essential information source for vets in practice and other prescribers and users of animal medicines, while the app gives easy off-line access. A special edition of the book commissioned by AMTRA will be also available for its SQPs shortly.

Dogs should be carefully observed following administration to ensure that each tablet is swallowed. Our survey will give users of the Compendium the opportunity to say how they think we can improve it to assist them in prescribing veterinary medicines and advising animal keepers on their use. We look forward to getting your views”.The NOAH Compendium App has been fully updated to mirror the 2019 edition of the NOAH Compendium of Data Sheets for Animal Medicines, which just been published with a free copy posted to every veterinary practice in the UK. A further study involving dogs looked at the prevention of nausea and vomiting before and after surgery. Dogs received either Cerenia soluton for injection or placebo 45 minutes before the administration of morphine for sedation and pain relief prior to anaesthesia . The measures of effectiveness were evidence of retching, vomiting, intensity of nausea and improvements in the speed of recovery by for example measuring time to sit up and stand. Cerenia must only be used in specific, appropriate situations with close attention to prescribing information. Safe use of Cerenia has not been assessed in cases of vomiting where the underlying cause is gastro-intestinal obstruction or ingestion of toxins. Cerenia should be used with caution in animals suffering from or with a predisposition for heart diseases. Cerenia should not be used concomitantly with Ca-channel antagonists as maropitant has affinity to Ca-channels. The primary use of Cerenia for cats is as an anti-emetic i.e. to stop nausea and vomiting. It works by intervening with the vomiting process in the brain.
