About this deal

This botanical rum recently won a silver medal at the London Spirits Competition and is from Cabezon Beverage, a Scottish craft spirit company. I’ve reviewed a few Mauritian rums in the past more I think from Oxenham Distillery than Grays. I’m sure WordPress will work its magic and add a few relevant links to the bottom of this post.

The rum has been crafted from locally produced molasses and is non-chill-filtered. It has been aged for a minimum of 13 years in a combination of French oak, ex-Cognac, and ex-Bourbon casks. Aberdeen-based Ardent Spirits, an independent bottling company, recently launched an exclusive ‘Sea Shanty rum’ with proceeds going to Aberdeen RNLI. Mauritius Dodo Rum is a unique and captivating blend of history, culture, and craftsmanship from the island of Mauritius. This rum not only showcases the island’s rich heritage but also pays homage to one of its most iconic yet extinct inhabitants: the dodo. Mauritian rum is crafted using both molasses and fresh sugarcane juice, resulting in a variety of styles and flavours. The island’s distilleries skillfully harness the natural sweetness of the sugarcane, creating rums that are rich, flavourful, and distinctly Mauritian. It’s not a very woody or oaky spirit. Most of the flavour is coming from the fruity notes which build on the mid palate – raisin and dark plums come through. Again it’s fruitier than the nose suggested for me.

In the glass I’m presented with a dark brown spirit with a red/orange hue around it. Pretty sure a lot of this colour is as a result of the Moscatel maturation. I have it on good authority, than any “finish” that is in years rather than months should really be referred to as a secondary maturation rather than a finish. So I will endeavour to use this terminology going forward…….. The Matugga distillery was established in 2018 by husband and wife team Jacine and Paul Rutasikwa, who had been selling their range of rums since 2015. Orkney distillery J. Gow Rum recently added a three-year-old cask aged pot still rum to its core range.Another noteworthy distillery is Grays Inc. Ltd., one of the island’s oldest and most respected rum producers. Grays is renowned for its extensive range of rums, including both molasses-based and fresh sugarcane juice rums. The distillery’s commitment to excellence and innovation has solidified its reputation as a leader in the Mauritian rum industry.

As the title suggests UK retailer The Whisky Exchange have teamed up with Denmark’s 1423 World Class Spirits. For this release we have a Single Barrel rum from Grays Distillery, Mauritius. The Scottish rum recipe is based on the Sea Shanty ‘wellermen’ song which talks about ‘sugar and tea and rum’.From rum distilled on a remote island to liqueurs and spiced options, here we take a look at some of the best Scottish rums. Obviously its a column distilled spirit so it won’t have some of the rougher edges of a Pot Still distillate but even still it’s certainly an easy sipper. J. Gow Rum takes its name from the infamous Orcadian pirate John Gow and the new rum, ‘Revenge’ is named after the ship that the pirate renamed after leading a mutiny on board, due to poor work conditions.

Natural sweetness and warm spice on the nose, Banditti Club opens up to toasted pineapple and orange on the palate with notes of clove and anise that lead to a long spicy finish.Sipped the rum is initially quite fruity with more raisin than the nose would suggest. At the ABV of 52.9% it’s very drinkable and whilst I’m not a fan of this term – quite smooth. Both varieties of Mauritius Dodo Rum are not just drinks; they are a celebration of Mauritian culture and history. They embody the spirit of the island, combining the art of rum-making with a tribute to one of its most famous, albeit extinct, inhabitants. The dodo-shaped bottles are not only a novelty but also a symbol of Mauritian ingenuity and a nod to the island's rich past. Whether as a collector's item or a delightful sip, Mauritius Dodo Rum is a perfect representation of the island's flair for combining its history with its present. have quite a name of the Cask Finishes or Secondary maturations having worked already with the likes of Worthy Park. This is another example of their expertise in that area.
