About this deal

Finish: The honey, vanilla and cereal dominate, and they linger throughout the medium-long finish. A bit of oak here, too. There is also some nutmeg, ginger, and pepper, but the spices are gently presented and very well integrated. This is undoubtedly the best finish I’ve tasted from a Glenlivet whisky before. After the addition of water, stronger chocolate notes come through along with orange, sawdust, melon, and green apple. It also gives off a much creamier, softer, and more approachable demeanor. The sweetness is more apparent and what was Angels Food cake, now is more reminiscent of a baked rum cake. With water, the nose is much more enjoyable than neat. After Oloroso, by the way, we’re told that there are further “cask experiences” in the pipeline so watch this space! Dark chocolate: The bitterness of dark chocolate can contrast and simultaneously highlight the sweetness from the Oloroso sherry casks.

In my opinion, it’s the best thing TGL ever put out. As I said, I’ve had the 25 a few times, and it’s good. It reminds me of Johnnie Walker Blue. It’s cozy and chocolatey, but I’m not intrigued. The Nadurra 16 is intriguing. It’s a wild card, you couldn’t even begin to guess what it is. You can still find Nadurra 16 dusties all over LA. I even told a friend she could probably find it in Denver, and she did, after making just two phone calls!

The Glenlivet was always available as single malt, but it wasn’t until after the Second World War that it began its rise. By then the firm was being run by Bill Smith Grant who saw the American market as offering new opportunities for the whisky, making it arguably the first single malt brand of the modern era. That said, even in the 1970s, 95% of its production was for fillings. Similar Nadurra taste, floral, but not hugely so, honey, toffee, oak, green fruits, apples and pears again, pears more so then apples. The nose of the Nadurra is very light and powerfully fruity. I felt like I had just opened the applesauce and planned on dipping Almonds and Pears in it. It was very pleasant and reminded me of those deserts that were served after a summer lunch.

Bottle has been opened for 6 months and is just under half full. Neat in a Glencairn. I will jot this down, then compare my review with 0814D as a sort-of head to head. Italy's Campari seals whisky deal". BBC News Online. BBC. 23 December 2005 . Retrieved 1 October 2007. Finish: Numbs the tongue and roof of the mouth for quite a while after swallowing. Vanilla again in the sinuses. Fruit comes out most in the finish here. Medium long. This isn't drowned in peat or sherry. The palate is very refreshing, with vanilla, honey, a bit of milk chocolate and "smarties" candy. And again, it is a light mouthfeel despite the strength. a b Morrow, David (1 September 2022). "Glenlivet to Make Whisky With Barley From Outer Space". Whiskey Raiders . Retrieved 4 January 2023. I found one of these sitting on a shelf in Nashville 2 years ago. Thankfully I snagged it because I haven't seen one since. This is batch 0814D. Nadurra means "natural," and this is bottled at cask strength and natural color, as we wish all whisky was. It is aged 16 years in first fill bourbon casks. All in all, the four of us, my wife, my brother and sister in law and myself all come away more then a little disappointed in this batch.

The Glenlivet, in an effort, I guess, to… broaden its horizons?… put out the Nadurra range in 2014, roughly. That’s when I remember first seeing them in the US, at least. I’m not crazy about them, but I’m glad they exist, like the show Modern Family or The Jason Bourne movies. The Nadurra Oloroso was the first expression from TGL to be fully matured in sherry casks, so it’s a marvelous Christmasy dram, perfect for Grandpa.

In 1881, George’s grandson, George Smith Grant, by then running the family firm, sued the companies who had added Glenlivet to their name. It took a further three years for a compromise resolution to be signed. This allowed the Smith’s distillery to call itself The Glenlivet, while the others could hyphenate their name with ‘-Glenlivet’. Over the years, 26 distilleries have styled themselves in this way although the practice now appears to have died out. So to test this myself i bought a litre bottle of present day Nadurra 16 year old at the duty free this january, so later on i will post my comparison review of that on the board. Palate: Similar to the nose, the palate starts off hot when sipped neat. But once past the unpleasant alcohol burn, there’s an explosion of sherry goodness. It’s a light and bright sherry, rather than a dark and brooding sherry like you find in Glendronach or some Aberlours. If sherry can be zesty, this is an example. It features a medium sweetness, with notes of maple syrup, molasses, fig, walnut and plum. The brightness does make it more savory than a traditional sherry bomb, an interesting twist for a whisky that was aged exclusively in Oloroso casks. The mouthfeel while neat isn’t amazing, with more youth and grains coming through, leading to a thinner mouthfeel than I was expecting. Nose: Red Apple, Floral, faint Nutmeg Spice, Ginger. Also a buttery woody smell that I can only describe as Raw Pie Dough. Together this really gave my mind the impression of an unbaked apple pie. Adding water made the floral note quite dominant. Very long legs.
