Nella prima parte ambientata nell’Europa del Nord tra Germania e Olanda ho trovato particolarmente irritanti quelle continue incursioni nel tempo in avanti e all’indietro quando ancora il lettore non si è immerso nella storia, non ha ben compreso le fila del discorso, il ritmo è sì incalzante, ma ripetitivo nella descrizione delle situazioni delle lotte, pasticciato nella presentazione delle varie dispute teoriche religiose, i personaggi molto simili tra loro e quasi indistinguibili.

Io sono stato dentro quest'illusione per oltre un mese e quando ne sono uscito, mi sono sentito arricchito. Dopo lotte secolari che durarono non trent’anni (come scherzava un grande drammaturgo rumeno) ma all’incirca tre mesi, cioè dopo averlo preso, lasciato e ripreso parecchie volte, finalmente, l’ho finito! Come impressione generale, questo romanzo è… quasi. Quasi storico (come fedele ricostruzione di un’epoca, voglio dire), quasi epopeico (come grandezza delle immagini, dei personaggi e del soffio narrativo), quasi postmoderno (come struttura, linguaggio, tematica), in poche parole – quasi grande. E sarebbe talmente potuto esserlo, perché tutto era lì! Ora mi spiego.It is as if though the characters are an excuse to retell the history of the times. Un romanzo mai noioso, avvincente, sospeso a capitoli rapidi eppure densi, che mette sempre in moto il cervello. La storia disperata d'un uomo che sceglie la parte sbagliata della storia, quella degli umili e degli ultimi, e che viene sempre sconfitto, morendo ogni volta per risorgere poi con un nuovo nome. La storia del suo misterioso nemico, Q, che come un'ombra agisce per disfare ciò che l'altro ha contribuito a tessere. Questo libro è un abbraccio fraterno a tutti quelli che hanno sempre sperato di cambiare il mondo con un'idea, o meglio ancora, con un ideale, e non ci sono riusciti. Si vede che il Gruppo ha a cuore le vicende dei rivoluzionari (e non mi stupisce che abbiano scritto un libro sulla Rivoluzione per eccellenza, quella francese), e si vede che padroneggiano la vicenda con una competenza storica impeccabile, mentre io ho scoperto di sapere e ricordare ben poco del periodo. La serie di capitoli che seguono questa parte si tingono di pragmatismo, il contesto storico è ormai delineato chiaramente e l’intrigo si può dipanare con maggiore coerenza. La prosa si fa più discorsiva e godibile e il libro decolla definitivamente. La resa dei conti si fa meno improbabile, il protagonista diventa artefice consapevole del suo destino e il lettore, con lui, smette di essere sballottato tra i fossi fangosi d’Europa. Volendo essere antipatici, il protagonista, in origine colto e benestante, comincia a fare i soldi, a frequentare le élite sovversive, all’impostura del soldato di Dio che vuole emancipare gli oppressi viene preferito un attacco frontale alle leve del potere economico e anche la narrazione beneficia del passaggio tra lo sperimentale della “Storia dal basso”, ad un modo di raccontare più vicino ai canoni del romanzo storico.

E' indubbia la critica di ogni forma di autoritarismo, l'esaltazione di un ideale di lotta per far sì che i propri diritti vengano rispettati, una condanna dell'atteggiamento repressivo tenuto dalla Chiesa Cattolica nel corso dei secoli ma ancora si dibatte se il messaggio finale sia un messaggio di rassegnazione e disillusione o se al contrario i capitoli finali non esaltino un atteggiamento di speranza e perseveranza. E’ stata sicuramente una lettura stimolante dal punto di vista storico per il tema affrontato: le lotte religiose del ‘500 che hanno seguito la riforma protestante, argomento abbastanza inconsueto per un romanzo storico; (interessantissimi inoltre i risvolti relativi alla nascita della stampa, dell’editoria in genere e in particolare quella religiosa) felice però di arrivare alla fine, troppa confusione narrativa e scarsa concentrazione, occhi sulle righe della pagina ma mente spesso altrove.
