About this deal

Most balconies are either in the sun or the shade, and that is a determining factor. Sunny balconies are really sunny, whilst on the shady side of a building there's no dappled shade or semi-shade – it's completely sunless. They can also be windy without catching passing rain. And one of the greatest problems is that everything is on view, there's no hidden corner to put things which aren't needed right now. With so many beautiful hanging planters to choose from, why not create a living foliage curtain to cast shade on your balcony? The plants that will thrive happily depend on your US hardiness zone and the aspect of your plot. Do bear in mind though that many balconies are their very own mini microclimates so take a close note of how and when the sun hits and whether the area is exposed to sudden, cold winds. Looking for balcony ideas to transform your space? Balcony gardens are in some ways the perfect outdoor spaces. Convenient, big enough to sit on (hopefully) but not so big as to create too much work, and the perfect canvas to create real wow factor outside. Perhaps the simplest way to shade a balcony is to suspend, drape or fix up fabric panels. Think laterally – a flat bedsheet, throw or tablecloth will all work well as a cover overhead and are often decorative too, adding to the look. Alternatively try cut lengths of store-bought fabric or table runners laid in parallel strips to cover a wider area. You don’t need to install metal screens; most are freestanding. As such, they’re a good option for renters, but avoid them if you have a windy balcony. Metal screens can blow over in strong winds and will cause more damage than other options. Pros

A balcony can help you enjoy a seamless transition between your home and the outside world so when working with a small outdoor space, it's important to not overcrowd the area to ensure the flow from inside your home is uninterrupted,’ says Lisa Cooper, Head of Product at Thomas Sanderson.

Flowering beauties Many ornamental trees or flowering shrubs are suited to planter boxes, particularly if they demand acidic or lime conditions. Manual operation with a hand crank on the left side. The projection can be easily adjusted as desired. Hanging balcony plants or potted plants can provide natural shade on a balcony. Vines, for example, can be trained to grow up a trellis or along a railing, providing shade and adding greenery to the space,’ says Robert Silver.

Even if your balcony is small don't think you have to use small pots and small plants. Big, bold, structural planting will still look better than over-filled, fussy arrangements. Balconies tend to deal with extremes, so if it's sunny it will be bakingly sunny; if it's shady, it will be absolutely sunless, especially in winter. One thing that is often forgotten on balconies but is really important is fragrance. Scented plants so close to the house are really magical, not just in summer but in winter too. The wind will be deflected over the roof and away from the patio if the glass or plexiglass panels extend from the patio floor to the top of the roofline. Generally, they’re also more expensive but don’t look as artificial. This makes them a good choice for those who don’t want real foliage but still want it to look realistic.Wind sensors Wired or wireless, these clever pieces of kit detect vibration as a sign of changing weather conditions and automatically close up the shade to protect it from possible damage. Finally, the one thing that will make a huge difference to any balcony is regular love. There is no sight so sad in the gardening world as a neglected balcony. Even if it's just 10 minutes a week, make a date to go out there, sweep around, water and generally spruce up. It will make all the difference. Balcony plants A patio could have a stunning view of the mountains or the beach and the ocean. In that situation, using a windbreak that even somewhat obstructs the view, like screens, would not be a smart idea. All solutions from the list below will provide optimal patio wind protection. They are either DIY or buyable, so choose the one that fits you best:
