About this deal

If you want to seam seal your SMD tent, the product to use is Gear Aid Seam Grip Sil (also known as McNett Silnet but recently rebranded). The Geertop Ultralight has two doors, two vestibules for gear storage (love that), and 2500mm waterproofing. Having used a dark green Lunar Solo and the gray one shown here, I far prefer the green-colored shelter because it’s stealthier in the forest and lets less light in through the fabric. But that’s just my personal preference. The gray tent shown here was seam sealed by Six Moon Designs and I’d recommend having them do it instead of doing it yourself. They do a far better and cleaner job at it than I’ve ever done. Comparable One-person Ultralight Tents and Mids Make / Model Number one, you won’t want to leave your gear outside or under a vestibule, and the Eldorado gives you plenty of storage space. mesh lining above the bathtub floor increases ventilation and keeps you further from the canopy walls, so you stay nice and dry.

The Skyscape Trekker has two doors and vestibules. Its dual entry allows you to enter/exit and store gear on either side of the shelter. In good weather, the double vestibule doors can be completely rolled up to provide 300-degree views from inside the tent. Hybrid double wall design First, this isn’t going to be the lightest shelter for a single wall. You’re going to be giving up 10 oz. But, it’s bomb proof in storms, although doesn’t carry or shed snow all that well. Typically you’ll need to tension the guy lines at least twice, three times in rain, giving 20-30 mins in between. But all Sylnylon has this issue. That points to my major complaint about the Lunar Solo: It suffers from the typical bane of single-wall tents: condensation created by warmer air and the moisture you exhale inside the tent and colder air outside the tent’s thin wall. To minimize that problem, the Lunar Solo features an all-mesh wall on the door side and a six-inch band of mesh around the perimeter just above the bathtub floor—protected from rain by a low, external awning extending over the mesh. But those design elements only help when there’s air movement. The tent pitches all at once, which is great for keeping the rain out of the inside if you’re scrambling to set up as a storm rolls in (a common occurrence in the Andes). This is a clear advantage over many of the dome-style tents from larger brands, where setup can be a scramble to limit the water that breaches the interior. The most important tip I can share when setting up any pyramid-like shelter like the Lunar Solo, is to keep the guylines as loose as possible when staking it out, only tightening them once the main pole has been set. This gives the shelter the ability to adapt to potentially uneven or slightly sloped terrain. With 26 square feet of floor space and 48 inches of headroom, this tent is palatial for one person. A tall hiker should be able to stretch out comfortably in this tent with all their gear inside and sit up straight without brushing the ceiling. It’s also wide enough that those who hike with their dogs may find they can sleep comfortably with their best friends beside them in the Lunar Solo. The vestibule offers an additional 8.5 square feet of storage space for gear best left outside. Finally, this tent is downright bargain-basement-cheap, and it’s a great three-season tent for beginners and experts alike. I chose the Geertop Ultralight Bivy as the best because it has all the benefits of a standard tent, it’s just smaller. I like that this bivy has structure– the poles keep the fabric off your face. The Lunar Solo weighs 26 oz. While there are lighter tents out there, it has among the best weight to usable space ratios we've seen of any ultralight tents. Sometimes ultralight tents will skimp on living space in the name of saving weight. The footprint on this tent is generous. Fabric

There’s a zipper that connects the two half-front doors, which you close above the front guyline. Each door has a small webbing loop at its base which you can connect to a prusik knot that travels along the front guyline. This lets you tension the doors down or up, or connect one to the guyline and not the other. MSR also designed the Hubba Hubba with a rain gutter on the rain fly and a StayDry door, which is a little flap covering the zipper to keep rain out.Mountain Hardwear is a high-end outdoor brand; you can expect this tent to perform well. This double-walled tent has ¾ mesh on the tent body for optimum star gazing.

waterproof? I was able to test the Lunar Solo out in the rain, and overall I was satisfied with how it held up. For the most part I was kept dry, but I did notice the occasional rain drop seeping through and landing on my forehead while I was lying down. This was not the end of the world, but I don’t feel it is 100% waterproof. Would I trust it in an intense heavy downpour for hours and hours on end? Hard to say. That is still to be determined. This would be a perfect tent for thru-hiking the PCT or Arizona Trail, but the Appalachian Trail? I’ve been long distance hiking for many years and I used the initial iteration of the Lunar Solo on the PCT in Sylnylon in 2011 and 2012 before the introduction of true ultralight fabrics for shelters. The Skyscape Trekker is a very roomy solo tent. It is 8½’ long and 4’ wide. The canopy crossbar creates steeper walls and a wide ceiling that gives a more open feeling than other solo shelters. The interior height is 45”. There is plenty of room for a large person to sit up, change clothes, and organize gear without touching the interior walls. The extra long floor accommodates taller people and reduces the chance that the footbox of your sleeping bag will get condensation on it. Double Doors and Vestibules The sleeping area is a surrounded 6-inch deep bathtub floor, topped by 6 inches of mesh. This ensures excellent ventilation while keeping you separated from low canopy walls. This keeps you drier on those occasions when condensation forms on the canopy.

The X-Mid 1P isn't the holy grail of ultralight tents, beginning with its weight, which tips the scales slightly higher than average for tents in this ultralight tent review. The interior mesh area is much improved in this version, but the 20 square foot area is less than other tents. Still, the X-Mid 1P is a great choice to keep comfortable in a wide range of scenarios at a great price – and that's precisely what you're looking for when embarking on cross-country missions. The vestibule is set on the long side of the tent to maximize views and ventilation when fully open. Close it and you've got phenomenal protection from the worst storms. The Lunar Solo's distinctive low hexagonal shape easily spills the wind no matter the direction. Short, steeply sloped sides, handle snow or high winds with ease. A generous canopy covers a 26 sq. ft. sleeping area plus 8.5 sq. ft. of vestibule storage. The 48" peak height, set in the middle of the tent maximizes room for sitting and taking care of chores. The waterproof rating was a tad low on The One. Both the body and floor were 1800mm, 10D ripstop nylon.

Six Moon Designs (SMD) is one of the pioneers in the ultralight gear industry. SMD’s Lunar Solo ( gear review he re) has been one of the most popular single-person tents since its release in 2005. The Skyscape Trekker, introduced in 2011, is a significantly different shelter design. The diamond-shaped shelter has two doors and two vestibules. The Skyscape Trekker has a hybrid double-wall design with a large mesh interior, significantly reducing interior condensation.

Analysis and Test Results

The primary downside of this mid is in the configuration. The two interior trekking poles provide a stable design, but they are set up right in the middle of the tent. This relegates the prime real estate of its shelter to a strip in the middle, mostly used for gear storage. The Beta Light is best for those seeking a floorless pyramid tent with many applications across all seasons and environments. My first excursion with the Six Moon Designs Lunar Solo, a five-night trip in Glacier National Park, provided perfect conditions to test its wind and weather resistance. Three of the five nights featured rain showers, including some heavy downpours that lasted nearly the entire night. Two separate afternoon thunderstorms forced me inside to seek shelter and wait for the storms to pass before emerging during breaks in the storms to cook dinner. On one particularly stormy evening, I was in the tent from approximately 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., then from 6:15 p.m. until 8 a.m. the next morning. I was able to spend a lot of time evaluating the livability and spaciousness of the tent on that trip.
