About this deal

Hello, friends! Our book today is the absolutely lovely It Starts With A Seed, written by Laura Knowles and illustrated by Jennie Webber, the gorgeous and informative tale of a seed growing into a mighty tree. Transplant your seedlings outdoors. After the hardening off period, you can transplant your seedling to its final destination, whether straight into your garden or into a larger A week or two before your average last frost date, start introducing plants to the outdoors. Place in a shady sheltered spot, gradually increasing the amount of time outside each day. Cover or bring indoors at night. Move into direct sun for longer times. Seedlings can be left uncovered outside at night when temperatures remain above 50 degrees F. Plants should be fully acclimated in 1 to 2 weeks. Plant permanently: Continue to keep the mix moist, but not overly wet. Seedlings should be watered once a day or every other day, depending on how much sun and heat they get. Remember that seedling roots are fairly close to the surface and they’re growing in a small amount of media, so they don’t need a deep soak the way larger plants do. The soil method generally produces faster results. Fill a large container with a porous soil such as a houseplant potting mix or cactus mix (not regularsoil!).

It took me to get to the likely outcome of losing him to realise I needed to do something. I broke down. I felt like I couldn’t handle anything anymore or focus on anything. All I knew in that moment was that I had to change. I had to make a choice. Do I go on letting these negative thoughts control my life and cause me to lose everything, or do I decide to work through these deep-rooted thoughts and live the life I was meant to live? It’s easier to start with pre-moistened mix, as peat-based mixes are harder to wet down uniformly if they dry out in pots. Although peat has a very high water-holding capacity once it’s wet, it actually repels water when it’s dry. Go figure. Start out with a few varieties so you don’t become overwhelmed. Choose easy to grow plants such as marigolds, nasturtiums, and basil to maximize success. Prioritize your favorite plants. Buy seeds:Label your newly planted seeds. Label each pot. At this early stage, cheap plastic plant markers work very well and stay out of the way, so save your big and beautiful metal plant markers for the garden. Some seeds should be covered with a thin layer of soil, others should be left exposed, while some need darkness to germinate.

After seedlings are well-established, move the flats to a light, airy, cooler location, say at a 55° to 60°F at night and 65° to 70°F in the daytime. This will prevent soft, leggy growth. Shop lights help provide proper lighting to seedlings. Transplanting and Handling In his book Where Our Food Comes From, food writer Gary Nabhan says that while seeds may be in U.S. government banks or an Arctic vault, seeds in isolation cannot maintain the kind of diversity upheld by "vernacular plant breeders." In other words, the long-term vitality of plants depends of the everyday people who grow these plants, allowing them to evolve, and then save seeds for generations. Once seedlings emerge, remove pots or flats from bottom heat and take off plastic covering. Place under grow lights, leaving lights on for 12 to 18 hours per day. As a general rule, LED lights should be kept about 12 inches from the tops of the seedlings, and fluorescent lights about 3 to 4 inches above the plant tops. Raise the lights as the plants grow. Yellow or brown leaves can indicate lights are too close; stretched or leggy seedlings can mean your lights are too far away. Ventilate:

This is a mix between a propagator and a heated seed mat. The propagator is heated itself so you don’t need to add a mat. I use a windowsill propagator, these are long and thin and designed to fit onto windowsills. Grow Lights Rather than diving in to freelance work when I arrived home, I decided to disconnect. I felt I had to switch off from everyone and everything. I needed solitude. To simply be still with my thoughts. Brave move you might say, as I was feeling pretty vulnerable after the week I was having. Perfect opportunity to get lost in those thoughts again and let the negativity talk me out of doing the course.

Artificial soil-less mixes offer all these desired qualities. The basic ingredients of such mixes are sphagnum peat moss and vermiculite, both of which are generally free of diseases, weed seeds and insects. The individual ingredients are also readily available, easy to handle, lightweight and produce uniform plant growth. You can make your own mix using this recipe: 4 quarts of shredded sphagnum peat moss, 4 quarts of fine-grade vermiculite, 1 tablespoon of superphosphate (optional), and 2 tablespoons of ground limestone. These mixes have little fertility so seedlings must be watered with a diluted fertilizer solution soon after they emerge. Vermiculite Containers I always believed in God, but it was in that moment of realisation that I was reminded of who He is, what he is capable of, and how much He loves us. Selecting the right time for transplanting your seedlings is vital to ensure their successful growth. Depending on the vegetable type, you should transplant seedlings after any risk of frost has passed and the soil has warmed up adequately. Transplanting at the right time ensures that cold temperatures or frost will not damage your seedlings. Troubleshooting Common Seedling Problems Damping-Off and Fungal Infections Fill a 4-inch container with damp potting mix. Plant about 5 seeds in the container, 1/2 inch deep.Water until water drips out of the drainage holes. The seeds should germinate in a few weeks. If more than one seed germinates, cut all but the strongest seedlings at the soil level (do not pull them, as this can damage the roots of the seedling you want to keep).

This Book Will Save the Planet

This is the main problem that people run into when starting seeds indoors. This is particularly true in late winter and early spring, when our days are short. Even the sunniest windowsill won’t get enough light here simply because of the short days. A seed sprouts only if it is viable and if the environment is conducive for germination. Water, oxygen, light, and heat can all affect germination. Water As more people turn to gardening as a hobby or to grow their own food, they’ve also discovered the rewards of growing plants from seed. It’s easy to become addicted to watching life sprout from a tiny seed that you’ve nurtured yourself. Starting seeds indoors allows you to get a head start on the growing season and to get your hands dirty, even if there’s still snow on the ground. Your tree can live outside in the summer. Bring it indoors if winter temperatures go below 45°F(7°C).

If a large, bright, south-facing window is not available, place the seedlings under a fluorescent light. “Shop lights” suspended from chains screwed into the ceiling are an inexpensive solution. Use two 40-watt, cool white or full-spectrum fluorescent tubes. Position the plants six inches from the tubes and keep the lights on about 16 hours each day. Assemble your pots in a seed tray (or reuse a disposable aluminum roasting pan, a baking pan, even that plastic clamshell that your salad greens came in) and cover with a humidity dome (or just plain old plastic wrap). If your dome has vents, keep them open to help with air circulation during the sprouting period. For me, grow lights are an essential part of sowing seeds indoors, particularly early in the year. These LED lights give your seeds all the light they need and prevent leggy seedlings. These are the ones I use. Sowing Seeds IndoorsHow could problems in the seed industry affect you? To be honest, seed industry problems only affect you if you like to eat, sleep, and play! The billions of burgers and ice cream cones that are sold each year come from animals that eat feed grown from seed. Encourage children to look around trees for signs of animal life; nests for birds, rabbit droppings, signs of foxes and hedgehogs. Everything a seed needs to start a life is contained within that teeny little hard casement you can hold between thumb & forefinger
