Vera Christiane Felscherinow [1] (born 20 May 1962) is a German actress and musician who is best known for her contribution to the 1978 autobiographical book Christiane F. (original title: Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo), and the film and television miniseries based on the book, in which her teenage drug use is documented. More importantly, it means that we wish that with time, more and more people will jump on board sharing their pictures, their videos and their stories about everything mentioned in this book.That was exactly what she was trying to do; try and find a place where she felt accepted and belonged. Overall, I sympathized with the narrator’s struggles, made me extremely thankful for life I have now. I only wish I had read it sooner. I would definitely recommend it to everyone, although I have yet to find an English copy. When I hit the scene the next afternoon, no one was grieving for Atze. It makes sense: nobody cries on the street. But on the other hand some people were definitely pretty pissed at Atze. He’d ratted on good dealers who sold first-class junk, and now they were all sitting in jail. Also, Atze still owed a lot of people a lot of money.

The story didn’t sink in right away, because I didn’t want to believe it. But all of the elements were there: apartment, glassblower’s apprentice, girlfriend, Andreas W.... it was Andreas Wiczorek, our friend Atze! The craziest thing about this whole story is that a week after Atze died his girlfriend Simone, who’d never used before and always tried to convince him to get off the stuff, started shooting up. And then a few weeks after that she quit her internship in the nursing program and started working on the streets. Zoo Station is a book with a strong commitment to honesty—even if honesty is boring. Chasing Christiane as she repeatedly chases her fix, shoots up, recovers, and relapses is often discouraging to the point of boredom, but it treats the drug problem in the terms that Jürgen Quandt, the director of a local protestant youth outreach center, is happy to see Berliners embracing: “as it really exists, instead of how we’d like to imagine it.” I understand the narrator’s point that it certainly felt like kids were viewed as the problem, even though they were the victims and just looking for a place to belong.

Perhaps the most odious and most improbable of all the tropes that Oppenheimer describes as common to the young adult addiction novel is the unintentional first exposure. But Christiane consciously chooses her substances and her johns; she persists despite her friend’s attempts to deter her from heroin. “Despite what the newspapers always say, it wasn’t like I’d been victimized by some evil dealer or seduced by a junkie,” she explains. “It wasn’t at all the case that I’d been turned into a heroin addict against my will. I don’t know anyone who’d been forced to shoot up against his will.”Whatever somebody could have told me about it would not have been enough to caution me on the journey I was about to embark upon.
