About this deal

The scene of Shaggy roasting the hot dogs is virtually identical to the one in A Clue for Scooby Doo, only with the addition of Velma. The fact that the gang finds abandoned cliff dwellings (being used a hide-out by the villains) gives a hint as to this episode's setting: somewhere in the Southwestern U.S. When Scooby is dognapped, Shaggy yells "Scooby" several times. He could blow the dog's cover that way.

The Gang's vacation to Hawaii is interrupted by a Witch Doctor who is a scaring both locals and tourists. This episode includes examples of the following tropes: The gang is on their way to Salem to see an old friend, Arlene Wilcox, who has just inherited her family's house. When they arrive, they see Squire Marley nailing the witch's sign to one of the trees. He warns them to leave, saying that Arlene has been possessed by the witch of Salem. The gang ignores his warnings and goes inside Arlene's house to find out what is going on. She tells them that Squire Marley saw the witch and claimed she looked exactly like Arlene, knowing that Arlene is a direct descendant of Milissa Wilcox. After being shown their rooms, Shaggy and Scooby dress in their Halloween costumes. Shaggy is a peasant, and Scooby is dressed like a witch, looking very similar to Milissa Wilcox. It is there that they first encounter the witch, who appears in their room. Before they can call for help, the witch disappears in a cloud of green smoke. At the very beginning of the episode, the entrance gate to the cemetery is spelled correctly. However, later in the episode, when Fred, Daphne and Velma are driving towards it to park, the spelling briefly changes to "cemetary" before reverting to the proper spelling. This episode is adapted into the third level of the N64 version of Scooby-Doo! Classic Creep Capers. Shaggy puts a twist on the " Scooby-Doo, where are you?" catchphrase (which he had already said beforehand) by instead asking rhetorically, "Scooby-Doo, where were you?" when he finds him hiding in a drum case. The Pineapple Parlor is conspicuously empty of other customers, despite there being one other car outside besides the Mystery Machine (although this could possibly be a staff vehicle). The Witch Doctor disguise looks just like the Witch Doctor from the Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! episode A Tiki Scare is No Fair. This book and the episode are also both even set in Hawaii. He and his boss wanted to scare people away so they wouldn't discover their pearl poaching operation. He posed as the Witch Doctor at the luau to warn people to stay away and fabricate an alibi for Simms. He then posed as Mano Tiki Tia while Simms took over as the Witch Doctor. The Witch Doctor does not appear to be very intelligent or perceptive (especially strange for a journalist/tour guide such as Mr. Simms), as he falls for Velma, Shaggy and Scooby-Doo's disguises, and is also easily scared by Shaggy and Scooby covered in leaves.

The Witch Doctor is stated as a past villain in the theatrical film Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, where the costume was put on display in the Coolsonian Criminology Museum. When Scooby and Shaggy use the house with the trap wall, the wall in front of the camera is missing.

Although it is Velma who points out that the rug is being eaten away at, and her mouth is moving, it's Daphne's catchphrase and voice that are being used to describe it.

Terrifying Tiki: The gang gets their Hawaiian vacation interrupted by a witch doctor in a tiki mask warning everyone away. As the story continues, he's joined by "Mano Tiki Tia", a mobile statue with a tiki face. Shaggy calls the latter a "freaky tiki" at one point. Latex Perfection: A creepy old man that is suspected as the villain turns out to be an undercover police officer in a rubber mask. This is the first time they play real detectives and offer their services to someone (even if it does turn out to be the culprit). The lining around the top of Scooby's collar turns brown a couple of times as Shaggy tells Mr. Simms about the non-part of the tour the rest of the gang want to go to and how there won't be a luau there.
