Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical, or simply Matilda the Musical, is a 2022 musical film directed by Matthew Warchus from a screenplay by Dennis Kelly, based on the stage musical of the same name by Tim Minchin and Kelly, which in turn was based on the 1988 novel Matilda by Roald Dahl. It is the second film adaptation of the novel, following Matilda (1996). The film stars Alisha Weir as the title character, alongside Lashana Lynch, Stephen Graham, Andrea Riseborough, Sindhu Vee, and Emma Thompson. In the plot, Matilda Wormwood (Weir), who is neglected and mistreated by her parents (Graham and Riseborough), develops psychokinetic abilities to deal with Miss Trunchbull (Thompson), the ruthless and cruel headmistress of Crunchem Hall School. The casting of Embeth Davidtz as "Miss Honey" was another great choice. While not what I had pictured from the book, Miss Davidtz captures the warmth and energy of the young teacher. Pam Ferris, as the grotesque "Miss Trunchbull," is simply outstanding. Both her demeanor and her looks bring the book's character alive.

The film is tightly tied to the original West End production; it’s directed by the show’s original director, Matthew Warchus, and features Tim Minchin’s musical numbers, including “Revolting Children,” the earworm you hear in the trailer. (Get it? They’re revolting, but they’re also revolting.) In addition to Weir, Thompson and Lynch, Matilda stars Sindhu Vee as librarian Mrs. Phelps, and Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough as Matilda’s hateful parents. Two songs are featured in the film. [13] One of them, " Send Me on My Way" by Rusted Root, is played twice: when four-year-old Matilda is left alone at her house, making pancakes, and at the end of the film, set to a montage of Matilda and Miss Honey playing at Miss Trunchbull's former house. The other song is Thurston Harris' " Little Bitty Pretty One", played when Matilda is learning to control her telekinetic powers. The film's original score was composed by David Newman, a frequent collaborator of DeVito. [14] Release [ edit ] Box office [ edit ] Mara Wilson as Matilda Wormwood; a young, savvy, well-mannered, intelligent 6½-year-old girl whose powers can make anything possible, Miss Honey's adoptive daughter towards the end.

A sing-along edition opened across United Kingdom cinemas for a limited time starting on New Year's Day 2023; a preview screening was shown on 17 December 2022, in aid of MediCinema. [22] [23] This version began in the United States on 6 January 2023.

Trunchbull is the kind of villainess children can enjoy, because she is too ridiculous to be taken seriously and yet really is mean and evil, like the witch in Snow White. And since most children have at one time or another felt that their parents are not nice enough to them, they may also enjoy the portrait of Matilda's parents. [8] The exterior of Matilda's house is located on Youngwood Drive in Whittier, [9] while the library she visits is the Pasadena Public Library on East Walnut Street in Pasadena. [10] In November 2019, DeVito said that he "always wanted to" develop a sequel to Matilda, [24] adding that a potential sequel could star Matilda's child, due to Wilson having grown up following the film's release.
