About this deal

Some airports have their own special rules & charges, I was nearly stung by a 100 Euro fee transitting somewhere in Germany, managed to politely talk my way out of it Be particularly careful with disc rotors (they can get bent), chainrings and the rear derailleur, all of which can be damaged quite easily. Last time going out they removed my single CO2, which has never been a problem anywhere else. That is fair enough, and easy to do.

stuff they never tell you about flying with your bike The stuff they never tell you about flying with your bike

Flying with your bike is nothing to be nervous about but a few insider tips can make the experience a whole lot easier. Working closely with our customers and dedicated design team, our products can be produced and printed to meet their specific requirements. With capabilities to print in up to two colours. The first question you should ask yourself is, which level of protection is required to protect your bike from damage on air travel. We have some answers for you! After a couple of times of taking my own bike, I rented one last time. It did make life a lot easier, and cost less, but I did miss my old steed...

On our various holidays over the years, we have used both a cardboard bike box and an EVOC Bike travel case and have been happy with both. We have put together a review of our EVOC bike travel case and written about using a Cardboard bike box for air travel. You can get a cardboard delivery box from your local bike shop and use that instead of a plastic bike box. I've hated Heathrow T5 from the first time I used it, travelling with a bike box, as none of the lift doors are wide enough to get a trolley with a bike box on through, so it's take bike box off trolley, put in lift, follow with trolley, etc, etc. Needed a trolley, as had other baggage. The first point of call should be your local bike shop as they receive all their new bikes in a cardboard box. Most bike boxes end up in recycling so bike shops are more than happy to offload one to you for free for your trip. Make sure you don’t leave this to the last minute as shops don’t necessarily get new bikes all the time and don’t generally leave used boxes in-store. We have never had a problem getting a bike box but have had to visit multiple shops before getting one. This could be an issue if you live somewhere that only has one bike shop.

Bike Boxes | Cardboard Bike Boxes | Bike Packing Boxes

Yes, we realize the irony in recommending a cardboard box after we've spent all this time talking about the merits offered by purpose-built bike travel cases; but considering a box is how even the most expensive bikes are shipped from the factory, they work pretty well for travel, too. Spending a little bit of time getting the bike prepared for travel is an essential step and something you can’t afford to cut corners on. We would suggest allowing at least an hour per bike from start to finish which includes getting the box ready as well. It always takes a bit longer than you think, especially the first time you do it. Our advice is to allow plenty of time for this step and make sure everything that could possibly be damaged is well protected. Leave the rear wheel on!One of the biggest threats now is thermal runaway of laptop/ mobility scooter type batteries. That is one fiercely intense fire. I hope I'm never faced with such a scenario mid-Atlantic....

If you’re using a cardboard bike box you should only need to remove the front wheel. This slots alongside the frame in the box. It’s easy to find. Almost any bicycle shop should be able to give you one. Sometimes they charge a small fee The bottom of the box shows tape reinforcement. This is after it came off the flight from Australia.
