About this deal

In Denmark the tree was associated with magic. A dryad called the Elder Tree Mother was supposed to live in its branches. If you wanted to cut the tree to make furniture from its wood, the Elder Tree Mother must be asked permission first. If she wasn't, you ran the risk that she'd follow and haunt you.

Our lives have been so closely linked with trees since prehistoric times, they've been the subjects of legends, folklore and mythology. The shortest night of the year was as much to be celebrated as the longest day, making the eve of the solstice the pre-drinks of this pagan party. Nowadays it’s common to wake to greet the sunrise on the solstice, but for ancient Pagans it would’ve been an all-night affair, celebrating the sun and welcoming its rise. The hawthorn was thought to be the ancestor of the maypole and was the source of May Day garlands and the May Queen was often crowned with May blossom. The rhyme ‘here we go gathering nuts in May’ referred to the collection of knots (not in fact ‘nuts’) of may blossom. Woodland Trust (Enterprises) Limited, registered in England (No. 2296645), is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Woodland Trust. Registered office: Kempton Way, Grantham, Lincolnshire, NG31 6LL. More recently oak was the sacred wood burnt by the druids for their mid-summer sacrifice. In fact the word 'druid' means 'oak man'. The story focuses around the students (known as the ‘Juvenites’) of ‘Pity Me School’. Various students are put forward for ‘Takings’ at the school whenever there’s a full moon and are sent to a ceremony at an area called Dancing Ledge. Those with clean souls will survive, but any Juventie who is deemed otherwise is sacrificed and taken to the Underworld (in other words they’re taken over the cliff in the belief that they are atoning for their sins). However, something’s not quite right…the Takings seem to be happening more and more often and even the most conscientious of students are being sacrificed. It’s around this time that Pity Me student, Jamie Tuff, learns of her ability to ‘Dreamweave’. Basically she has a power that allows her soul to jump into other people’s bodies, but she discovers this much to her own downfall as people start to question her about these mysterious Takings thinking that she is somehow involved. When Jamie Tuff survives her Taking, she thinks her worst nightmares are behind her. But then her soul starts wandering into other people’s bodies, and she discovers that the Island harbours a deadly secret.

Across Britain, ancient circle dances are still reenacted wherein dancers link hands to circle chaotically, then break away to jump through the flames. They then pull the ring to and fro through the fire until the flames are extinguished, guarding the participants from ill fortune for the year. Oak has a long history of folklore throughout Europe and was sacred to many people, including the ancient Greeks, the Norse and the Celts.I know I usually make similar requests for Illusion games, but that goes doubly so for this one. Games from Miconisomi feel like got heart put into them, there is a case that such a feeling is missing from the majority of Illusion games. Midsommar, for example, is more than just a cult horror movie, it was a national holiday marking the solstice in Norway up until 1771 and is still celebrated in Sweden and Finland today. masterpaper on An Education on Art Education Yes, sometimes studying can be very difficult. For me, the biggest difficulty is writing written works. It’s good that I was able to find specialists…

As I built the piece up, I continued to glaze in the darks and then tighten things that I felt needed to be kept crisp, while allowing the softening to happen elsewhere. At some point close to the end, I signed the piece, but it turned out not to be done. I still needed a glaze or two and a couple more minor tweaks. During the Taking the souls of teenagers are taken by the Goddess so as to stop the spread of evil through sacrifice. Jamie Tuff, the protagonist survives her taking. She thinks that she is safe to live a long and happy life only to find that her soul starts to ‘wander’ into other people’s bodies, and through the ‘wandering’ she discovers that the small island she calls home harbours a deadly secret. The Woodland Trust is a charity registered in England and Wales (No. 294344) and in Scotland (No. SC038885). A non-profit-making company limited by guarantee. Registered in England No. 1982873. It's the only British plant to be named after the month in which it flowers. The appearance of its blossom was the herald of the end of winter and the beginning of summer and the saying ‘Ne’er cast a clout till May is out’ almost certainly refers to the opening of the flowers, not the end of the month.

Here we have the finished piece, which is five inches wide by seven inches tall and is called Summer Sacrifice. In total it was completed in a little over five hours over two days, but could easily have been completed in a single session. Still moving along with establishing the values and beginning to insinuate details here and there. For whatever reason, the colors I put down felt more intense than I’d have preferred, so I spent a lot of time experimenting with different mixtures to tone down the color intensity a bit. It’s possible I went a little overboard in muting the color, but given how grayish brown everything seemed to be with the wildfire smoke outside, it felt like the right direction to go. With all the celebration and neolithic celestial alignment that goes on at Stonehenge, there’s no denying that the summer solstice is perhaps the oldest excuse to throw a party going. From solitary witches to groves of druids, most Pagan faiths have honoured the solstice with rituals, feasts, and just a hint of debauchery across Europe for thousands of years.

I loved the setting. Pity Me School reminded me of an evil Hogwarts and I found a lot of the magical side of the story had touches of Harry Potter about it (which can only be a good thing!) The way in which the Grand Hall was described had me picturing Hogwarts & the caped teachers sitting at the front on a stage. Then there’s the ‘Pity Me Perfects’ who do all of the teachers spying for them and appear where you’d least expect them. The folklore surrounding elder is wide and often conflicting. It was thought that if you burned elder wood you would see the devil but if you planted one by your house it would keep the devil at bay. Apparently, it could charm away warts and vermin.

Another feature of this book that I just have to praise is the illustrations. They are amazing (some are downright creepy!) and they add that little extra to each chapter and the atmosphere of the scenes. I noticed that it was Holly Hinton herself who drew these illustrations…she is one talented lady! With this piece, once I got the basic areas done, I then spent time trying to find ways to describe and insinuate the various textures and details with the paint—be it the grooved and weathered bone or the fiddly layers inside the sinus cavities. Simultaneously, I worked to bring more of the sun’s colors into the skull itself. All willows were seen as trees of celebration in biblical times but this has changed over time and now willows are often associated with sadness and mourning. In the days leading up to the summer solstice, ancient Romans celebrated the Vestalia festival, which paid tribute to Vesta, the goddess of the hearth. Rituals included the sacrifice of an unborn calf removed from its mother’s womb. This was the only time of the year when married women were allowed to enter the sacred temple of the vestal virgins and make offerings to Vesta there.
