About this deal

Though most retinol products should be used at night, we like this one in the form of a night cream because it can be applied on its own. It has a light but moisturizing texture that feels non-greasy on the skin, and it’s formulated with retinol and a variety of other ingredients—like glycolic acid, ceramides, squalane, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid—to smooth and calm the skin while giving it a boost of hydration. We found that it did a great job at reducing redness from current and previous breakouts, working to give the complexion a more even overall look. It was non-drying and non-irritating, and one of our testers even noticed a reduction in the amount of blemishes she was getting. While we didn’t notice visible improvements in fine lines, wrinkles, or texture, we think it’s a great option if you’re looking to even out your skin tone and moisturize at night in one easy step.

Retinol is a type of retinoid and retinoids are a group of related compounds that derive from vitamin A. Unfortunately, retinol does come with some side effects, though these can be reduced by choosing the right formula for your skin type and applying it properly. You should always introduce retinol tentatively into your skincare routine at first, then build it up slowly as your skin becomes more tolerant.Boots’ No7 re-labelled its excellent No7 Advanced Retinol 1.5% Night Complex last year – the 1.5% it referenced is not the retinol concentration, but the total combination of retinol and peptides – so this newly rechristened No7 Retinol 0.3% Night Concentrate has exactly the same formulation as its predecessor: a 0.3% concentration of retinol with trademarked Matrixyl 3000+ peptides to boost cell regeneration, plumping skin cells for visible firming effects. This is a fantastic option for those who are new to retinol because it’s gentle, hydrating, and affordable. We found that it worked nicely to fade dark spots and even skin tone, though it’s not the best choice if you’re looking to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. We also appreciate that it’s fragrance-free and non-comedogenic, making it a great option for those with more sensitive skin. Crystal Retinal 1 is a vitamin A derivative similar to retinol, formulated to be gentle yet effective on mature skins. The overnight treatment is excellent for reducing fine lines and wrinkles, firming and plumping the skin, and erasing dark spots and areas of hyperpigmentation for a fresher, younger look without any irritation. Retinal also has antibacterial properties, making this a good option for blemish-prone skin. Don’t mix retinol with AHAs or BHAs because using too many active ingredients, too frequently, can spark sensitivity. For this reason, also be careful if using a cleanser with actives. Retinol remains very effective for its original purpose of acne treatment and, since it boosts skin renewal, it’s also good for healing acne-related scars. The Mayo Clinic also notes that retinol can be effective for the treatment of other kinds of skin damage, including sun damage. In what forms is retinol available?

Natural bio-retinoids aren't derivatives of vitamin A at all, but they have a retinoid-like effect on the skin's surface and can be even more gentle, which works well for those with sensitive skin. Hero ingredient Retinyl Acetate is a derivative of vitamin A and works to gently resurface and enhance surface skin cell turnover, improving appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation. This form of slow-release Retinol has been specifically chosen as a gentler anti aging serum option. The added Squalane, a key antioxidant ingredient, provides additional hydrating and soothing benefits whilst helping to smooth skin's appearance. Another product featuring retinaldehyde, this formula combines the powerful ingredient with a host of moisturizing ingredients, like glycerin and apricot kernel oil to combat its drying effects. It features a creamy, gel-like texture that feels like a hybrid between a cream and a serum, making it easy to spread out and absorb into the skin. If you want to use both retinol and brightening vitamin C in your skincare routine, apply the latter ingredient in the morning to give your skin a breather. Some brands do blend the two together, but these products have been carefully formulated to not cause irritation, so don't take a DIY approach. How we test retinoid serums Retinol serums should always be applied at night after cleansing and before a moisturiser," says Dr Phillips, who adds that "only a pea-sized amount of retinol serum is required for the entire face". When you first apply retinol, use it once to twice a week only. Once your skin gets used to it, try increasing the frequency to alternate nights.
