About this deal

the portions of vegetables and roast potatoes were small and some pieces of carrot and parsnip were very hard Wadworth’s brewery team brew a core range of beers and a minimum of eight seasonal beers a year. Farmer’s Glory has stood the test of time and remains the only one to be brewed every August in readiness for the harvest. It will be available in pubs as cask ale throughout September. Along with other thorny things like totara and gorse, cattle will avoid them unless fed hard, but horses or goats will not blink at the odd spine, so you do need to protect them. Birds can be a problem so hang up old CDs and build elaborate scarecrows with battery timers and big hats. Net the bushes if desperate. Invicta: mildew-resistant, heavy crops of large, green-pink fruit which can be eaten raw, frozen, or turned into jam or

By this time we had had enough. We had been there far too long and there was still 3 more courses to arrive. We asked for the bill. Full price it said! So we queried this with the owner Terri and the head chef who i presume is her partner. They were raging that we had the cheek to complain about there establishment. No apology just disgust that we hadnt enjoyed there efforts. After telling us to just get in our cars and leave and swearing at us at the bar we walked out halfway through our Christmas meal. These very typical New Zealand fruit were inherited from our British settler past and they thrive on the West Coast, especially if you have the canny, green-fingered talents of a retiree and treat them with the attention they crave. You can bonsai them in individual pots – large if possible to retain water and well mulched for summer – so they are mobile and you gain better positions in the sun for ripening fruit. If well-fed, those green bullets do indeed swell and ripen to red, orange, or even purple berries, bursting with tart (but not sour), ripe goodness in summer. Speak to them, tell them stories, sing to them, etc. A gramophone will suffice.About Wadworth: Wadworth is an independent family brewer and regional pub operator, very proud of its West Country roots. Founded by Henry A Wadworth, the business passed to his founding partner John Smith Bartholomew and is now in the fourth-generation of ownership by the Bartholomew family. Wadworth has created original beers at its brewery in Devizes, Wiltshire since 1875 and is one of the few remaining family brewers to deliver to the local area using shire horses. It also has a 200-strong pub estate and works hard with its business partners and managers to ensure that the pubs offer a warm and welcoming atmosphere, quality food and drink and excellent accommodation to make their customers’ days. October to December. Mediumapple, red flush and faint red stripes over gold. Firm fleshed with sweet- sharp, pear-drop quality, almost spicy. In some seasons benefits from thinning. Blossom is most attractive. Medium to large apple, lemon coloured skin and white juicy flesh. Flavour is slightly tart and refreshing, flesh is crisp.Vigorous, healthy tree, but strongly biennial in habit (at least in our experience). May also be used as a cooking apple.

Pax: dark red when fully ripe, large and sweet berries but requires pruning to thin out and shape its vigorous, spreading nature, virtually spineless at maturity. Thanks to Rossendale Online and the Farmers Glory for the prize of lunch for two in the recent competition. We went there in December; Id recommend giving the place a try if you havent been already.

Fruit Directory

Well-known russet apple, widely available commercially in season. Alas, originates from Lord Egremont's estate in Sussex, rather than from the West Cumbrian town. Medium fruit, russetted with yellow/green skin and dry, white flesh. At its best, flavour is delicious, nutty. In recent years we have had excellent crops of high quality apples, but the trees took a long time to come fully into production. The picture above shows my ever-vigilant organic friends’ collection in full fruit over summer. Their bushes are above waist height, planted into the ground, and mulched with sphagnum moss for weed suppression and moisture retention. Product of 20th Cent breeding programme to produce more modern apples. Attractive, even fruit, but we hve found it not hardy and prone to scab and canker. Once grown widely inScotland and Northern England.Overall, probably the best choice for a Cumbrian orsimilarly 'challenging' location - produces reliable crops of healthy fruit, very little affected by scab. In most seasons a very acceptable eating apples, as well as being useful in the kitchen. Recommended. Early October to November. Medium to large, slightly russeted fruit with distinct eye and flattened shape. Flesh is crisp, holds shape well in cooking. Can also be used as a sharp eater, especially as season progresses. Healthy and reliable, vigorous tree. Recommended.

Early-late September. Red-flushed, conical apple, medium sized fruit. Flesh is white, chewy with a hint of strawberry. At its best, one of the best flavoured apples we grow. A choice variety, but scab can be a problem. This apple originates in Scotland, but does not quite match the official description! May be mis-named.October to December. Small to medium apple, well-known in Victorian times. Well-flavoured, slightly tannic flesh (has been used for Cider making in the past). Reliable.
