About this deal

The discovery of disturbing revelations about the building’s history and the escalating danger Jules faces represent turning points that heighten the tension and drive the plot forward. The setting of the Bartholomew was absolutely brilliant. A gothic nightmare set in the heart of a bustling city.

Riley Sager’s writing style is fast-paced and gripping, building suspense with every chapter. The author expertly weaves together past and present, keeping readers guessing and second-guessing as they navigate the twists and turns of the story. Sager’s prose is atmospheric and vivid, creating a sense of foreboding and mystery. Riley Sager's newest release is an addictive thriller that is a little dark and even spooky at times. I was so caught up in the “one more chapter” mode that I kept reading beyond our buddy read goals. In this thrilling tale, the protagonist, Jules Larsen, finds herself caught in a web of mystery and danger when she takes a job as an apartment sitter in the enigmatic Bartholomew building. As she unravels the dark secrets of the building and its inhabitants, the suspense intensifies, keeping readers guessing and eager to uncover the truth. Ahhh, not so fast - there are rules! One of which include no guests...period! Do not interact with the residents. And you must spend every night in your assigned apartment. Ok! Easy peasy! This book’s story development and a little part of the ending have quiet resemblances with “Rosemary’s baby”! At least the apartment management doesn’t hire young people to have sex with devil and have beautiful satanic children looking like Tom Ellis. The ending veered off in a direction that just didn’t seem to mesh with the theme of the first two thirds of the book. I wish I could say I came away loving it, but I didn’t. Not quite. For me, one star sadly fell away for the ending. But as always...that’s just me! When somebody rings your doorbell, you will receive a notification on your smartphone. If you are not home, you could simply ignore it and watch the visitor, or if it’s a trusted mail delivery person, you might want to initiate an audio connection and instruct them of a safe place to leave your parcel.

She should’ve paid attention to those rules! Just like a roach motel, those who enter The Bartholomew never leave The Bartholomew. Every so often, life offers you a reset button. When it does, you need to press it as hard as you can. Gist: Rowan takes a live-in nanny job at a luxurious but eerie smart home in the Scottish Highlands. As strange occurrences unfold and tensions rise, Rowan finds herself accused of a terrible crime. This atmospheric thriller explores the line between reality and the supernatural, keeping readers on edge. The book presents numerous mysterious events and eerie occurrences within the Bartholomew building, such as disappearances, hidden rooms, and strange messages, creating an atmosphere of suspense and intrigue. The exploration of psychological manipulation delves into the dark aspects of human behavior and the tactics used to control and manipulate others. It prompts readers to question motives, trust, and the impact of psychological games on individuals’ well-being.Climax: The climax occurs when Jules confronts the mastermind behind Bartholomew’s secrets, leading to a thrilling confrontation and a race against time to escape. Jules’ personal journey of self-discovery and overcoming her own hardships adds emotional depth to the story, as she confronts her fears and finds inner strength throughout her investigation. This book has no idea what it wants to be. Is it a ghost story? A murder mystery? By the end, did I even care? No. No I didn't. The book reaches its climax when Jules confronts the mastermind behind Bartholomew’s secrets and attempts to expose the truth. Also, can we talk about how Riley Sager was a faceless pseudonym writing female protagonists for a while and then was unveiled to be a dude? Not my favorite.)
