There’s no doubt that the picture comes with some limitations at its price, but overall the TU8000 impresses with its natural colour handling, crisp, detailed picture, solid motion processing and good upscaling. It needs some settings tweaked to perform to the very best of its abilities, though. So before we talk about the picture, let’s talk about how to get it looking its best. The first thing to adjust here is the picture mode, which is most accurate under Movie. Many will prefer the attractive cooler tones of Standard, which is also slightly brighter, but if you’re looking for the most accurate picture and colour palette, Movie is the option to go for.

That said, the 55D8000 hasn’t got rid of crosstalk completely. There are still minor traces of it to be seen here and there – more, still, than we saw on Panasonic’s 2010 plasmas, in fact. But let’s be quite clear, here: the 55D8000 is definitely a true advance for the 3D cause, and sets the bar high for the rest of 2011’s TVs. Of course, here at HDTVTest, our number one priority is picture quality. Samsung’s 2010 LCD TVs continued the company’s tradition for excellent contrast performance, but did have some video processing issues which made us recommend them only with reservations. Even SD terrestrial TV content looks decent. It’s a little soft on detail, as you’d expect, but even with the further noise that creeps in, it’s a solid picture with a good colour balance that’s wholly watchable. What really matters about the 55D8000’s 3D capabilities, though, is that they deliver the 3D goods much more successfully than those of Samsung’s first-generation of 3D TVs. There’s certainly a big enough performance gap for another TV to sit between the Hisense and the Samsung, and we’re pleased to report that the TCL 55RP620K fills it perfectly. The Samsung UE55TU8000 has two built-in speakers, each with 10W power. The total output power of 20W is usually sufficient, unless you are too far from the TV. In this case, you should buy external speakers that turn your room into a home theater. If you buy external speakers, you can also use the multi-room link technology. The sound is very clear, but it depends on the quality of the content. We will give 4/5 points for the Samsung UE55TU8000 review part of the sound. Design With HD content in SDR, the TU8500’s image has a bright overall picture level, with a satisfying level of pop. It’s a great match for regular Blu-ray. Step it up with native 4K, and the screen snaps into clearer focus.This year, Samsung has thankfully fixed the scaling issue, meaning that side-by-side encoded 3D material reaches the screen looking as detailed as it possibly could, without any “eroded” details. We ran our own Side-by-Side 3D resolution test chart into the UE55D8000, and were glad to see that all of the fine details were reaching the screen. As for the quality of the motion in 3D, we came across some interesting behaviour. We uploaded the brightness measurements and uniformity photos after running the TV for two months in our Accelerated Longevity Test. Familiar from other Samsungs, we’re offered two Game mode options. If you opt to select Game Motion Plus, you’ll retain some elements of beneficial picture processing. In this mode, input lag measures around 26.7ms (which is fine for casual gaming). However if you disable Game Motion Plus, and go hardcore Game mode, input lag drops to a mere 11.7ms (measured at 1080p/60fps), which can be considered excellent. Finally, motion settings fall under an option called Picture Clarity. Opt for custom and you can set the judder settings yourself. Something around 3 or 4 seemed to work best for most content we watched, and motion is, for the most part, admirably stable. Of course, this all makes for quite the wealth of content. Thankfully Roku’s Search section is brilliant. Type in anything related to TV and film – actors, directors, the name of a film, TV show or streaming service – and the search will return a list of appropriate results where you can open up the relevant third party service to buy, rent or start streaming whatever you like.
