Weinfeld believes that similar terminology and wording can connect the Abrahamic and Davidic covenants with ancient Near Eastern grants, as opposed to being largely similar to the Mosaic covenant, which, according to Weinfeld, is an example of a suzerainty treaty.

He wrote, “I would rather not do it but observed that the will of the Lord be done, and if he desires it, I desire that he would manifest it through Joseph the Seer. So the idea behind a “Covenant Code” was that the law would be ongoing rather than just for one occasion. These are two of the four sources of the classic documentary hypothesis, the other two being the Deuteronomic ("D") material and Priestly ("P") material. The phrase Covenant Code is not found in the Bible, but the term is sometimes used to refer to the set of rules in the Books of Moses that would be perpetually observed. In Genesis 15 and similarly in the Abba-El deed, it is the superior party who places himself under oath. When the Bible mentions a covenant, it’s referring to a strong, solemn agreement between two parties.

It is inconceivable what loss the Church of our day is suffering because so few believers truly live as its heirs, in the true knowledge and enjoyment of its promises. For example, David made a covenant with his friend Jonathan, but after Jonathan died, he still cared for Jonathan’s relative, Mephibosheth (2 Sa 9:7).

Indeed, from the Book of the Covenant one would never know that the states of ancient Israel were monarchies. The revelation is a translated version of the record made on parchment by John and hidden up by himself. And Moses took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said, Behold the blood of the covenant, which the Lord hath made with you concerning all these words.
