Some elements of the survival story feel more like convenient plot points than believable developments, and the writing is occasionally overwrought as McKinty seeks to make weighty statements about life, death, and spiritual links to the natural world, but on the whole, McKinty has written an exciting thriller that follows Heather and the others as they seek to run, hide, and survive the elements until the police—whom they have no way of contacting—can arrive. From the moment the novel begins, the sense of disgust that surrounds the disease of leprosy is unavoidable. On a day out, at the kids’ insistence on checking out the wildlife in the vicinity, the family finds themselves touring Dutch Island, which is a private island normally closed off for visitors. Common background elements occur in both Island and Brave New World; they were used for good in the former and for ill in the latter.What was supposed to be a fun filled Australian family holiday rapidly becomes a horror filled nightmare and a fight for survival. But during the weekdays, with their calmly repetitive and efficient chores, the protective barrier grows taller and firmer.
