About this deal

In October 2009 the Leicester Mercury featured an interview with Townsend where she discussed the new Mole book and her plans for future works. Brett makes a reappearance in the later books as a successful yet unpleasant businessman who loses his fortune during the credit crunch.

A stage adaptation was written by Sue Townsend in 1984 of the first book – The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Aged 13¾: The Play with music and lyrics by Ken Howard and Alan Blaikley. The first books concentrate on Adrian's desires and ambitions in life (to marry his teenage sweetheart, publish his poetry and novels, obtain financial security) and his complete failure to achieve them. Susan Lillian "Sue" Townsend was a British novelist, best known as the author of the Adrian Mole series of books. Adrian Mole's painfully frank diary offers a glimpse into the tormented life of a 'misunderstood intellectual’ as he attempts to navigate the challenges posed by his parents' unhappy marriage, being a bully-magnet, acne and unrequited love. Though by the last part of the book, although still obnoxious and mildly annoying (at 23), I didn't want to hit him at least, so can recommend the last portion of the book just for the slight lack of irritation.

She also published five other hugely popular novels - including The Queen and I and The Woman Who Went to Bed for a Year - as well as writing numerous well-received plays. It includes some content in diary format, some letters between Barry Kent and Adrian, Adrian’s talks on radio, and several poems. His loyal friend and co-worker Bernard Hopkins comes to the rescue, moving in with him and promising to remain until his cancer is in remission. Her hugely successful novels include eight Adrian Mole books, The Public Confessions of a Middle-Aged Woman (Aged 55¾), Number Ten, Ghost Children, The Queen and I, Queen Camilla and The Woman Who Went to Bed For a Year, all of which are highly acclaimed bestsellers. Adrian is such a real and believable character that it's hard to believe he sprung from the mind of a middle-aged woman, who herself has never, presumably, been a 13 and 3/4 year old boy.
